My '02 SC430 (with only 29,900 miles) has its CEL on. Code read was P0155: "Oxygen Sensor Heater Circuit - Bank 2, Sensor 1". Was told this is passenger side and before the CAT. Local shop wants $318 to replace the one sensor but is recommending replacement of both front sensors together. Curious as to how serious this is (heater failure vs. sensor failure?), plus does the price seem reasonable for a single replacement? Also, what's the general opinion on doing a preventative double replacement when only one is coding as bad? Thanks!

very low miles for this failure but it certainly could happen.
When did this happen?
have you had any maintenance lately?
that is really expensive and I would ask them if all of the connectors are okay.

Bank 2 sensor 1 is the upstream sensor on the passenger side. The sensor can be had for $55.08 from Amazon. I just had this one done and it cost me $63.00 for the labor. You do the math. See included link. You do not need to have them done in pairs. There is no evidence that they fail near the same time.
By the way, I drove mine for a month with the CEL on and had no problems at all. Gas mileage stayed the same. It is not an emergency.

Bgw70: the CEL came on two weeks ago. No maintenance of any type done on the vehicle. OBD reader showed three distinct triggers of the code. Will check with the shop (might be a different shop!) re a possible connector problem per your advice.

Interestingly, the written quote I got for the repair shows the part price (Denso #234-4138....different from the one you referenced at Amazon) at $161.52 plus $107.97 for labor. Plus a mysterious "Enviro/Suply" surcharge of $26.95 and the tax of course. Found that exact part at Wal-Mart for $52.67 and even cheaper elsewhere. Glad I checked here first.
4138 is upstream driver's side not passenger. It is $46.78 on Amazon. The only difference in all four of the sensors is the length of the cable.

Just f.y.i., another shop quoted me $275-$300 for the job.........UNLESS they have to drill the old one out which would add $350 to the tab for manifold removal. Suddenly I'm living in Ripoff City. OUCH! :-)

I have done a number of these myself in the past and I have never had to drill one out. I have had a couple be pretty tight coming out. I went to NC State. Where is Ripoff City?

Apparently, Ripoff City is right here in good ol' Carrboro. I'm fairly new to the area and also a Nittany Lion grad (many moons ago!). Also was a fellow Virginian for many years (Reston).
If space is tight, and you need to fit a longer bar. You get out your crowfoot line socket.
Ive had Fanagle around like this, but never come close to having to drill one out. In fact, I've never heard of someone having to.

Anyway, if it is B2S1, it should not be that difficult to change and a shop should only charge you about $80 or less for labor.

Bgw70, thanks for the info and the video. The code does show B2S1, so I'm thinking that the shop put the wrong part # on the written estimate (driver's side instead of passenger side). But wanting $161 for a part available everywhere for about 50 bucks is nuts (and labor is $108). Definitely will look for someone that'll let me supply it.
Dumb question: since the code is for sensor heater malfunction and not the sensor itself, would it be accurate to say that it's only a problem during warmup until the sensor reaches full operating temp? Just curious.

Agree about the crazy markups. And the $161 part quoted on the estimate is a Denso part #. That's more than triple the price over what's available in stores. YIKES! This forum is sure worth the price of admission... :-)
