Default Driver side mirror wont tilt down

I've had this issue for quite a while. on and off for the beginning of me owning the car and now pretty much all the time. The driver side mirror will not tilt down or up. Only side to side. Any ideas? The passenger side works fine and even tilts down when i reverse.

You might have a bad motor control. Might have to replace the mirror. You can find a used one in the junk yard or eBay .

Yeah sounds like a bad motor. Luckily, I have a spare driver's mirror with all working motors and worm gears. From what I've heard it's an easy swap to change the motors. Let me know, if you're interested.

This is a common problem. The plastic gears get stripped. I once had a Lexus mechanic tell me that it is the worst designed unit on the entire car.

It is for this reason that I have the "tilt when in reverse" set to OFF -- less use the better. Also, take extreme caution when cleaning the mirror not to press hard enough that it moves. And that's not much pressure at all.

That was my thought also. Seems like there were a couple of threads on replacing the gears or the mirrors back a few years ago.

Johnny,
How do you turn off the tilt down?

On the switch that controls the mirrors, there is LEFT, RIGHT and CENTER. If you leave the control in CENTER, it will not tilt the mirrors during reverse.

Can the internal parts be replaced without changing the external plastics? I had the entire car painted a different color. I don't really want another mirror to have to be painted.

Before tearing in to a mirror, check the mirror control switch.
Symptoms match switch contact corrosion; easy fix too.

Yes, the individual internal parts can be swapped. I have completely torn down both sides... here's a post with pics to help illustrate.

The side mirror quitting to tilt has happened to me on several occasions and on different Lexus cars. In almost all instance, I just tug on the mirror either up or down (left to right sometimes) and it actually dislodges and would return to tilting.

Before you do anything, try to force it to go up or down, left or right and then try tilting it. Hope it works for you.
