Default SVC Lights are on

vsc I meant to type

These two lights just came on. I have a 2003. I did have them reset by a friend, but they come right back on.

Would someone please tell me what needs to be done, or if this is really important? I ask because cost is an issue when thinking about taking it to a dealer.

Thank you very much

Easy fix, short pins 4&14 on the OBDII connector,
Turn key on, look for VSC light to flash rapidly,
Turn key off, pull wire or connector.

Go drive car, have fun!
This link will help you understand how to build a $2 tool for this reset...

Search for VSC and you will get hits. Try it.

There it is...

Normally happens when you go in for the yearly tag inspection where an OBD scanner is plugged in. But solution is so simple. In fact eons ago when I bought the car, it had to be taken to the local L dealer for re-set, part of the negotiated punch list. Knowing what I know not, would have been a simple fix. I do have my own re-set tool now, all of the $4 cost.

my problem is that i am not comfortable working on cars at all....i can change the oil and such, but not much more....

i didn't get an inspection, the only thing differently i did was park in a grass yard at a funeral. after leaving the funeral the lights came on. i don't know if that would have caused it.

as far as resetting it goes; what if there is a larger issue and i just reset it? is it possible that i have an issue that is larger? the car runs perfectly and i don't hear anything that i didn't hear before.

Thanks so much for all of your help. this site is great.

VSC Reset is normal. Some people have eliminated the VSC ON by re-setting (battery unhook). When you unhook the battery you will lose your seat pre-set and radio preset stations. Sometime your auto-roll up-down on the windows too. For the windows it is easy to re-set. All in the manual.

Highly suggest that you create your own VSC reset tool. You will need at least 2 or 3 times a year.

I agree with Mandy and let me add that you should stop by autozone or someplace like it. Ask them to check for codes using their OBDII code reader. If you are not familiar with OBDII, you pronounce like this, O,B,D two or just OBD.
It is a free service they provide.

Even though your lights is off now, there still might be codes that are still stored in the memory.
It's still a good idea to have the codes read before you do the state inspection and have the codes cleared by reset.

my lights did come back on.

just went my oreilly's and they said it is trouble code c1201, c1336, and p0051

they told me i need to buy and install an oxygen sensor ($80 with them).

my question is; do i need to replace this or just do the reset using the paperclips or whatever?

thank you for any and all help you can give me.

My lights were on as well after my engine rebuild. Bent a paperclip and pushing into pins 4 and 14 in OBD II port. Lights when off!!
