Replace Subwoofer Foam
 

This is the replacement of the foam in the subwoofer. This job should take about 1.5 hours or so. You will need a star screwdriver bit, 10mm socket, and 12mm socket....it is better and easier if you have an extension. I have posted some pics, to show the steps. You start on the headrest by taking them apart. Then pull the back seat up and take it out of the car. There are 4 12mm bolts holding the back rest part of the rear seat. Once those are removed you will reveal the sub. There are 4 10mm bolts holding the sub in place. Once you take those out, you will need to snap the connector loose by pushing in the tab portion on the plug, it should slide out. Once the speaker is out, there are 4 philips head screws, remove those, and carefully snap the cover off the speaker. This will reveal the speaker itself. If the foam is torn, or brittle, carefully remove the foam, and replace it with the new foam per the instructions that came with the foam. I bought mine off of Ebay for $20. Best $20 I have spent. The sound is amazing! Here are some pics....

You can go a step further in this (I did this last weekend....easy to do) and remove the side panels. There are 7 screws on both side. 10mm. You will need to put your top up half way and it will reveal 2 hidden bolts/screws. There are four toward the back of the panel, which you will spot immediately when you remove the back seat. There is another hidden with the area where the seat belt retracts within the seat....it is a bit tricky be careful here. You can loose the screw easy. I suggest you use a magnetized tool, or as I did put the magnet off the back of a name tag on your tool and it "grabs" the screw when released. The panel will pop out easy. Be careful at the front bottom, as it has 3 plastic connectors... I hope this helps.

Couple of questions:

How much did you buy of the speaker foam? Enough for all 3 speakers (1 Sub and 2 side speakers)?
You will need to open the top to remove the side panels. Did you happen to take a picture of the hidden bolts?
Can you share where you bought the foam at fleabay?

I am now inspired to check/repair my rear speakers. My Polk replacements in the front are doing well. But I bet the rears are shot, like everybody else's.

Hey Mandy, I purchased the foam on ebay from simplyspeakers.com for the sub. Their service was quick and the quality of the foam seemed excellent. The sub cost $20.70 free shipping, and I purchased the side speakers from springfieldspeaker.com they cost $23.95 w/free shipping their service was quick as well. The glue that came with the speakers from springfieldspeaker.com was easier to work with. I will post a pic of the hidden bolts soon.

Thanks for the photos and the instructions. I just upgraded my Nav unit and noticed that there wasn't any foam left around the subwoofer. Funny, I didn't notice that it was bad, I guess I am not the audiophile I was in the 1980's. I am only going to ask this just because this is the whole reason I got on line tonight... is there any upgrade that doesn't require major surgery to the subwoofer or should I just follow these instructions and be happy.

yes get a Polk db840 8ohm 8 inch will bolt right in. this is a major upgrade. this is what I used. I used the focal 1 amp for more bass power. total cost approx. 257.00

Time to do this repair I am hearing what sounds like a busted sub however if I do the sub might as we'll be ready to do the rears thanks for the awesome DIY

My Polk fronts are doing good and now I am hearing how bad the rears are!

I need to do something with all of my speakers, how long does repairing them last?

I ordered the Sub from Simplyspeakers and Springfield for the rears. Can not wait to tear it down and do the repairs. Also while the RR seats are out, I will clean my Rear belts which are dirty.

How did you get the tray up? Did you use the manual instructions? I am a bit apprehensive in getting the top half way thinking something might go wrong. But while the rear seat is out, this is the time to check the rear side speakers. I do have the foams as well. I do not want to go back and do this again.
