Somewhat frequently my wife's 2003 makes this sound. It sounds like it's coming from behind the instrument cluster. It can last for several minutes. I did a search on the forum but couldn't find anything. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, did you find out what it was/fix?

Thermostat opening and water circulating . Its been discussed before

Usually caused by some air in the radiator system - its all pipes (as George Costanza once said)

The solution is to (when cold) top up your radiator - that will solve it.
