Car won't start
 

Hello I have a sc430 and I had to change the Ecu , iv had it mapped so the keys all match and now it wants to start but it just doesn't seem to want to kick in , it turns over then just shuts down , there is a smell of petrol so I'm assuming its getting trough , I just wondered if there is any other reason for it not to start

with the smell of petrol you may have wet plugs try putting the pedal to the floor and hole it there and try starting it.

Hi iv tried that and it made no difference , the car had been in a crash and it hasn't moved or started for two years , I should of mentioned that first , is there some sort of cut off device that will stop it starting ?

are you getting spark, no cut off that i know of

If there is a problem with ignition key recognition, won't it have those symptoms?

No I've had that mapped so the Ecu and the doors and the ignition recognises the key , it wouldn't turn over if it was that problem

I'll have to try the spark first , someone told me that it was more complicated than that , I'll get back to u wen iv tried it , it won't be for a while as I'm working away but thanx anyway

it takes 3 things for a engine to run: spark + air + fuel if you have all 3 should start an no timing belt problem

NOT SO. Does your flashing security light go out when you insert a key into the ignition?

When I bought new precut key, but not yet programmed to the ECU, the starter motor would turn but the engine would not run once the key was released.

There are 2 separate procedures for programming a remote key. It needs to be programmed so that it is recognized by the "engine immobilizer" AND programmed so it will activate the door locks. It is possible that your keys are not being recognized by the immobilizer.

To confirm that your key is properly programmed to the immobilizer the flashing security light should extinguish (go out) when the key is inserted. If it's still flashing, then turning the key will enable the starter motor to turn but the engine will not fire or run once the key is released.

I am with JR. Lots of issues with getting a new key (with immobilizer) to be accepted by the ECU. In your case old keys, new brains (ECU).

There is a fuel shut off that can be activated in a crash. i dont know where it is but I remember reading about it in manual

If the airbags deployed then it would trigger that shut off.

To add on to my previous posting.

I have a key that is cut for the ignition but has not been programmed. I keep it hidden in a magnetic hide a key box under the car frame. It can only be used to open the door manually. I keep my programmed valet key well hidden in the car. The purpose of the unprogrammed key is to allow me access to the car's interior where I can retrieve the valet key to drive the car if I loose my keys when out at the beach.

I just confirmed that this unprogrammed key will enable the starter motor to engage or turn but the engine will not run. When I insert it in the ignition the security light continues to flash.

DOES YOU SECURITY LIGHT STOP FLASHING WHEN YOUR KEY IS INSERTED?

+1 on this diagnosis. Fits all symptoms. While other diagnosis could fit the symptoms, this seems most likely.
