Default automatic transmission problem

I have an interesting automatic transmission problem. Hot or cold makes NO difference. When the car is started, put in reverse it will work perfectly 100% of the time. When the car is started, put in Drive the transmission will slip for about 5-10 seconds before working perfectly. When the car is started, if you wait 3-5 minutes, then put it in Drive it will work perfectly

Your car is a 2002 ? How long have you owned it ? How many miles on it. have you ever serviced the transmission ie oil changes etc. If not original owner have you access to service records prior owner. How long has this been an issue. Your forum join date is May 13 2013 . Info like this help to figure a course of action.

SC430 is a 2002. Mileage is 168K. Own it for 3 years. Problem started about 3 weeks ago. Never serviced the transmission.

That's high mileage and never serviced the trans. The obvious is the screen and trans fluid must be really bad. That will trash a trans real fast. I would start with having it serviced and make sure they know how to flush the entire trans. On the forum most members will suck out what they can from the dipstick tube and then fill with fresh and then repeat this process over a few times to try and freshen it up. I don't think that the drain plug can get a;ll of the fluid out since a lot the fluid stays inside in the converter. Do a search on the forum auto transmission.

Good Luck

You might want to do a major service as well all fluids brake, power steering, radiator, rear differential, Very basic stuff will preserve your car and prevent failures.

Just do a (or several) drain and fill of transmission fluid. Don't power flush it.

Drain and fill right now, after 300 miles do another one, then after 500 miles. You need it. You will probably see how murky your fluid is.

Yo Ken, your tranny is crying for some TLC. I do a drain refill every 10-15k miles, not a full flush. But I have done this each year for the last three years. But in your case since nothing has been done for a while, I'm with Mandy, you really need to do a series of drain refills in succession with some light use of the car in between each drain refill.

I am going to change the transmission fluid and filter, but you will NEVER believe this!!! The battery has been getting weaker over the last several weeks and finally died. I replaced the battery and the transmission problem is GONE!!!!!!!!!!!

But you still need to change the fluid.

Is the filter in the tranny a replaceable unit or just a wire mesh type that can be cleaned and reuse?
Also does the tranny pan uses a gasket or the toyota silicon?

A weak battery does weird things to the tranny. My battery started to play up and the tranny felt like it was not shifting properly.

Luckily the battery died in my garage, and not stranded me in the middle of nowhere. Change to a new battery and now the tranny shifts like normal.
