Default HELP! Rear Suspension problem....WHAT IS THIS?

Anyone know what the copperish piece is seen inbetween the two visible coils on top of the strut? It has come loose and is making a terrible noise!

If I'm not mistaken, that's the top piece that attaches to that dust boot that is supposed to keep your strut piston covered. I bed that does make one hell of a racket! As long as 1. Your 3 bolts in the trunk that hold your strut top to the car body are tight, and 2. The bolt that sits in the middle of those 3 strut top bolts is tight (The one that keeps your spring from shooting off), It shouldn't be a huge deal other than the noise.

Or is it the collar that is crimped to the top of the shock tube itself??? I might be wrong because I haven't inspected that part of the suspension in person - just looking at diagrams and pictures.

But, couldn't hurt to inspect the shock to make sure that it hasn't been leaking. You might also push down on that corner of the body and let it spring back to see if the shock is still damping properly (does it pop back up with no hint of bouncing?).

I think it is actually IS the collar, but the strut itself is performing just fine with no bounce...looks like were just gonna have to buy a new strut....

Depending on the mileage on those shocks, this might be the time to freshen up both sides? Kinda pricey (parts and labor), unless you are doing the work yourself (harder than the fronts, for sure).

Sorry, I have nothing to add to help. But I see you're from Omaha. Me too! You're the only other SC owner on here from Omaha that I know of.

husker741, good to meet you...
The SC430 is actually my dad's car. I was driving his SC while I had mine in the shop. He's borderline deaf and couldn't hear the noise that the strut was making so I figured that I'd have it looked at while I had it.
I used to be a more productive CL member before I moved on from Lexus (to Volvo)

I had a pretty nice GS back then:
