Considering an SC; what should be considered?
I will not be buying in the immediate future; probably 18 months from now and the SC is on my list of cars.
My requirements are basically RWD V8 coupe. The humidity and heat is so bad in SE Texas the top will stay closed most of the time so I really do not care about the convertible feature. If they had offered a hardtop version I would have considered it.
Anyway, I have had 4 Toyota products in the last 12 years so I know all about reliability and quality. I currently still have a 98 SC300 that has been rock solid. The great thing about that car was how so many parts interchanged with the NA Supra. Control arms were a lifesaver in terms of this. Lexus arms were $680 each which I was able to buy Supra arms for $250 each and swap in the less aggressive SC bushings to come in at under $350 for each arm.
Is there much parts interchange on the SC430 in terms of suspension as well as other wear and tear parts? Engine of course is LS and GS but no Toyota division interchange.
Also, what are major problem areas in this car?
Do the seals for the top dry rot, shrink, harden, etc....and are leaks common?
I plan to just drive the hell out of the car and not keep it as a weekend toy. My plan is on an 06+ car just to get the upgrades.
Also, do all of these cars have TPMS or is it just the ones that came with run flat tires stock? I prefer to not have this feature at all.
Is navi screen failure an issue? Do the screens interchange easily or did they make changes each year?
The mechanical and electronic parts of the top and the navi screen and system seem to be the most costly things to go wrong on a car out of warranty with these things; otherwise all else should be cake with proper maintenance.

Check out this stickie that is at the top of the home page. It will tell you just about everything you need to know about the car.

FWIW: leaks are not common but do happen. TPMS are standard along with RF tires. (A large percentage of owners swap the RF tires out for non-RF tires for a better ride though.) Nav screen failures are rare (I'm not sure that I've heard of any). You can purchase a full warranty even after the factory warranty runs out.
