Bob,
I'd go with the black in the two cases that you showed above. (The stainless steel picture is missing.) The black blends in with the rest of the interior better, however, if you are wanting to make the new radio pop (stand out), then the other one will accomplish that. Me, I prefer the black though.

jzwu,
Bob just did a great job documenting his job with a major write up on his installation. Here is the link:

Be sure to check it out.

I've been looking for a site that can do stainless steel fabrication. This would be a complete custom piece to fit the trapezoidal space, as well as leaving clearance for the door to properly open and close at the apex. Then there is issue of mounting. Beatsonic did a nice job with the molded ABS, (you cant see the backside with alignment post and prongs that fit into the existed bracket hole.
I have black carbon fiber on order, and looking for some leather now too.
I appreciate all the opinions. Thanks.

Bob,

You could probably take one of the trim pieces with you to a machine shop and they could fabricate you one out of stainless steel. Just tell them what you want and tell them to copy the trim piece. It ought to be a piece of cake for them. If you were in the DFW area, I could recommend some for you but you shouldn't have any trouble finding some there that are hungry enough to take on a small job like that. You'll wind up spending more on set up time than labor and materials with the shop. So it kind of depends on just how much you are willing to spend.

Bob, I'll post pics as soon as I put in the leftover pieces I have from my dash kit. I hope to cut out the shape in a day or two and install with 2 faced tape. Btw, I am also having problems with display washout with the top down. I will also post pics of the mic and sensor.

Yes I am afraid this design (the car's) was never intended for LCD displays. Newer designs have the screen recessed in dash with a substantial overhang as a nature shade. Only other solution is a daylight readable screen which would dramatically raise the price of the unit.
You have voice commands for your phone, I don't in the model in install...I could learn to hate you already John.

Cool Black....

I like the black much better, Bob! In my 430 with ecru interior I put black floor mats in and recovered the 6X9 door speakers with black grill cloth and they look great.

I like the black inserts better, but they still look a little out of place because of the size.
If the new screen is wider, your new setup would likely look more oem-ish.

I think the woodgrain is the way to go. Looks very OEM. I like it a lot!

Oh come on Bob! You're always giving me more homework. Get a new head unit, update your signature, and now update YouTube? But it's hardly been a year. LoL

Isn't that an interesting take. The total space involving the radio head unit is identical, but the total amount of faux stainless steel finish is not. I must admit John's solutiion looks very nice and compliments the other trim throughout the car.
