OEM install it your self to save some ridiculous labor charges. Otherwise you have to find the same diameter and depth measurements to fit in the existing opening. Unless you are looking to make a radical change.

Your are correct the sub is 16 ohms all other speakers are 8 ohms. Remember the sub takes signals from both the left and right channels. So damage would occur over usage. To prevent damage I supposed you could add some in-line resistors to raise the total to 16 ohms of resistance.

If you have a few minutes you can read THIS for a better understand of speaker impedance, output and resistance. It does a good job explaining how and why amps are damaged by speakers with improper ohm ratings using real world and more technical examples too.

From what I've read, adding resistors in-line with speakers to match the impedance is not a good idea from an audio standpoint. If you're not an audiophile, it will probably be okay and it should protect your amp from damage. You will also have to pay attention to the power rating of the resistors, as a resistor that is too small could burn out if it is underrated.
The problem with using resistors is that resistors, especially power resistors, are not purely resistive devices. The extra inductance of the resistor can mess up the performance of the speaker, which is a mostly inductive device.
The moral of the story is to just use the proper rated speakers.
Gene, I can't remember whether you still have a warranty, but if you do, the speakers are typically covered. I know that I've had at least 3 replaced in mine in the 6 years that I've owned my '02.

That last statement is true. I discovered my sub was blown when my LL was installed. I had mine replaced under my extended warranty. I have an 02 too. You should listen to Harold's comments he holds a BSEE.

I'm sooo confused!
I've followed a few threads on stereos and speakers and it seems as though there was consensus that the subwoofer was 8 ohms Now I read Bob's post and I'm confused...I was ready to pull the trigger on replacements for 8 ohm ....somebody help! Paleese!

Info as requested in the PM. As I mentioned in the PM this is for the 2002 cars... if it changed in later models, (I don't believe it did) then someone else must provide the data.

Also, don't forget perspective...if you are replacing amps too, then whatever rating the new amp would be applicable, not the ML specs. Also, if you plan on using the same space to mount a replacement sub, diameter and depth will be issues too.

you are right, the speaker is 16 ohm and it has't changed. i don't plan on changing the amp, so i have to stick with 16 ohms. you can't find a 16 ohm 8" other then stock. lexus has our number unless we want to change our amps also. i use the 8 ohms DC Golds for door woofers.

It's that or add the resistors we were talking about earlier.
Guess Lexus' mom Toyota, didn't raise no fool, huh? She's got you locked if you don't want to pull out all the wiring or or have custom adapters made for their wiring harness. The sad part is the cost of the subwoofer...bad enough. But, if you have some patience, it's an easy DIY install. So you can save four hours of Lexus labor charges.
