Radio antenna problem on 02 SC430

Noticed the antenna did not go all the way down. It will also not go up. When I turn the radio off the motor grinds for few seconds but the antenna does not go all the way down. Mast problems? Any links how to fix it?

You can get a non-OEM antenna mast pretty cheap.

Here's one on eBay (I know NOTHING about the seller, just giving you an example)...

To replace the mast, follow these instructions here...(courtesy of VVTiBob)

Antenna fixed

I'm a newbie whose wife just bought a cherry 02 SC430 with 68K. The antenna broke on the 3rd day.

By following the links above, I removed the antenna from the trunk, took out the "tail" that was in the motor and had the new antenna installed complete in less than 3 hours. I am a very average mechanic.
Thanks for all the help. Love the forum

Now on to the blown speaker in the passenger door........

Great news and welcome to the forum. Congratulations to you and your wife on your purchase!

Don't buy Ebay antenna

I bought two ebay antennas and they are both junk. The plastic cable is not as big as the OEM and it breaks off. Get the OEM for $60 and save yourself a lot of trouble.

I think all the guys who own red SC430's will not appreciate Spangdaddy calling it "cherry color" :)

It's hard enough to fight back the idea that the SC430 is not the most masculine car on the road, without people calling it "cherry red". LOL

Thanks for the instructions. My plastic cable was definitely broken off but the motor took the OEM replacement mast no problem and nothing elses has jammed/ no other problems. Thanks again.

Cherry

Cherry as in "Sweet", Mint, Cream Puff etc.....No offense intended.
By the way, repaired the speakers in both front doors and now wife is super happy. 1st door - 2 hours taking my time and following the directions posted in these forums. 2nd door - 20 minutes. Total time 3 hrs.
Thanks again,
Spangdaddy

I believe your are correct Igorxx. I just installed a fee-pay one and it grinds when the mast is fully extended. I think it's because the cable is different and is slipping.

Habious, thanks for the antenna mast replacement info, very useful.

Im tryiing to replace the antenna. I get to the point where the antenna is hanging straight toward the ground.... dangling by the mast. I pull and pull but it won't come out like the Lexus repair manual says. Oh any FYI, the manual tells you to pull out the antenna after you the radio into antenna mode but fails to tell you to unscrew the base of the antenna. Thanks Lexus.... My antenna went down down 75% of the way before.... How did you know I only wanted it to go down 25% :/

VVTiBob 05-05-12 04:53 PM

Did you follow the instructions in the TSB linked in post #2 above??

Yup... thats where I downloaded the PDF.

Should the antenna pull right out with the mast? Cause the mast is stuck.
