How long do you honestly plan on keeping your car?
I really plan on keeping my SC for a LONG time.
Here is why,
1) You don't see too many on the road generally even less (next to zero) when looking for a modded SC.
2) All the work and money spent on modding just to sell it in the near future? I think not ! I am going to enjoy the fruits of my labor.
3) Lexus quality / V8 STANDARD engine / convertible hardtop
4) Discontinued now so its a classic gem.
Unless the new SC is significantly better in every way shape and form I do not see me parting with her anytime soon.
Its a vicious cyle, buy car = spend tons of $$$ modding = sell it later = buy another car = spend tons of $$$ modding = sell it later = etc etc =

My take:
1. The car is a Lexus and this one is made in Japan.
2. Discontinued, now classic.
3. Not many were produced.
4. Car has underpinnings of a really GREAT car.
5. And the most important reason....she loves it.

What could you get to better an SC?
Mines here for good and my kids can fight over it when I'm in the big Garage in the sky............

I felt this way about my Subaru SVX, it got numerous compliments, timeless styling, AWD, and very dependabale. Then came year 10 and the tranny started to slip. The car was still pristine, but a $7500 repair bill on a $6000 car made me sadly kiss her goodbye.
I still miss that car a lot.
I watch the glorious dance our roof does and wonder if I could manually open and close her if she fails out of warranty. The rest of the car I am sure a good mechanic can keep running, but that roof, so many sensors, and servos, very scary.
The car is fast enough that performance is not an issue, has an interior unmatched in anything less than 75K, and I am now addicted to the hard top convertible. To be honest if I wanted to replace LB for 50K, I could not think of any contenders, and I paid less than half of that. My plan is to at least 2020, if the repair bill G-d is kind. I am only at 59K miles, but that Florida Sun, no garage space, and half of South and Central America on my roads, it is not going to be easy. Thankfully Lucky has saved himself, and me a couple of times, He wants to live.

Wil44 Steve do you think the big garage in the sky will have wooden floors? lol
KaiserSea1 I would hope that if the roof has to fail, I hope that it's down, and not up. That way I still could drive it around with the top down on nice days. lol I got the garage in Pa. and the new Fl. house has a garage also. She is covered either place

Fear not about the top.
We will solve any and all issues to keep that top humming up and down.
We need to get a bill of material on the mechanical components of the top, maybe keeping spare parts will be the key.
Last year was 2010. Automotive suppliers (as in the company I work for) are required to keep components for model year end + 10 years. Means components are guaranteed to be avaialble until 2020 in our case for the SC.
We have plenty of time to amass spare parts for our SC!

i hope my Sc is as good as my 99 Land Cruiser. I've had it 10 years and hope to keep it several more. It has been virtually bullet proof all this time. I also can not replace it. The new ones are out of the line of reason, pricewise. Plus, they have too many whistles and toys. Mine is without height control and traction control, extras that are put there to fail and cost you money.
The engine on the SC seems to be as smooth, if not smoother, and the build quality is as good as the Cruiser. So hopefully I can keep it as long.

I had my last SC(300) 'til 175,000 miles. I plan on keeping my 430 for a long, long time. I know the resale of these cars isn't going to be much (at least right now) and with the work and love we put into our cars, we'll never make that back. So until I can afford the Aston-Martin, I'm keepin' this car!!

I'm planning on keeping my '02 until about 2020ish. After that, I'll decide.
