Default Spare Tire 145/70-17

I've yet to convert over to NON Run Flat tires (RFTs) since I have quite a bit of tread left on my current RFT's. I have lowered the pressure in them to correspond with the pressures listed on the front door decal which did help smooth out the ride somwhat.

I'm still more than likely going to buy NON-RFTs so I have been looking into buying a spare wheel and tire. There is no need to buy the entire kit since I will only put the spare in the trunk for long trips. On www.mylexparts.com you can buy the spare wheel for $105 without the tire. However, from what I've heard the doughnut spare which size is 145/70-17, it cost about $265 which I find somewhat exorbitant for such a small tire that will not get much use. Does anyone know where this size of tire can be purchased for less then $265, or is this simply something that must be purchased from Lexus.

The above link (actually just a dozen or so threads previous to yours) will give you some other options. I've been thinking about this myself so just finished reading it and yours. I am also most interested in NOT paying $350 for a Lexus spare if it can be avoided since I think the probability of using it is low.

CJS, I’ve read numerous posts on this topic and have posted on it previously. Before I had concluded that since I have AAA free towing within a 100 miles, I would buy a compressor and patch kit. However, when I saw the spare wheel for $105 I thought great, I’ll just buy a cheap tire and I’m good to go! Not so, the tire is incredibly marked up in price, but is certainly a cheaper option then spending $750 on the complete spare tire kit sold online. In summary, I would like to have a spare wheel/tire for long trips without paying through the roof for it.

Just sign up on a couple of the Supra forums and ask for one and check their sale threads. I got mine for $45 from a former owner. Another possibility is the Camry spare, I hear that they are the same size & bolt pattern (be sure to double check me on that though). There ought to be tons of those around, maybe even in junk yards.

This is about where I am. I have the road service & tow coverage from my insurance company and have been looking around for an inexpensive "will fit" spare solution. No compressor [yet] though.

I picked one up for $50. about a year ago. Don't know what it came off of, the tire is bigger than the 145 (T155/80R17 100M) but it fits in the well and it fits on the car both front and rear, no problem. Wish I had asked what vehicle it came off. Haven't worn out the RFT yet, so it just sittin' in the garage gathering dust. Probably will go with the compressor too, just in case I don't have the spare with me.
