I have a 2002 SC and the gas rams for the trunk lid have softened and do not hold the lid up anymore....... I spoke with Lexus and was amazed at the cost of two replacement rams and before I shell out $600 does anyone know if there is alternative vendor for these items?
This happend on my '02 and then on my '03. Both cars were CPO so it was covered under warranty, but I think I asked at the time and the price was no where near $600 (could be wrong on this).
On the other hand, it should be simple to pick up the parts and pop them in yourself or have your mechanic do it.
If I remember correctly, OEM struts, called "lift support cylinders" for SC430 are about $112 each. If the dealer wants to charge you $350 labor I'd run as fast as I could from them. It's a 10 minute job for experienced mechanic and maybe 20 minutes for you if you take your time AND drink a cup of coffee.
I just installed a set of supports from NAPA for $120 each. They seem to work fine and took less than 5 minutes to install. Two things to watch out for though. Make sure you get the right part number for a trunk with or without a spoiler - there is a slight length/force difference. Also make sure you get a matching set of supports when you pick them up. They have three different types of end fixtures (all ball joints) some are metal and some are plastic. The first time I picked up a set they had two different styles of joints on them (one set had plated joints and the other had plastic ones). I had them order another set which had a third type of joint on them that was exactly the same as the stock units (black metal).
