Falcon1, we've had the trunk struts replaced once, and the ML amplifier had to be replaced around 60Kmiles, as well as one of the tire sensors. other than that, it's been regular maintenance every 5K miles.

I have a 2002 SC430 and mine just turned 170,000 miles yesterday! Still runs and drives as good as the day I bought it! Still not a Mercedes, but got this because out of all the Hard Top Luxury Vehicles out there... This one had to have been the most appealing! I've had to take the radio apart myself to rectify the ERROR 3 for the CD changer indash. (Fixed spring for loading dock with a spring from a ball point pen) Then the DVD navigation system.. Known issue.. Disc Read Error, Check Disc.... the laser lens MOTOR goes bad. (2.10 motor ordered online) Took that whole thing apart and soldered the new motor in.. works just like the day I got it once again. Last replacement item was the heater in my passenger mirror glass went out... Ordered a WHOLE assembly complete from a red SC on ebay 99.00 including free shipping. So needless to say I saved quite a chunk of change. Lexus - 800 plus installation for the stock radio to be replaced... 4500 plus installation for a new dvd navigation unit... and 450 plus installation just for the mirror glass... Honestly... MAKES ME SICK!

Every time I put my top down or up with my luxlink unit It works perfect, This is not how is supposed to work is it. I felt sure I would have lots of issues . Darn thing works every time. The engine remotes start every time imagine that .

...I have a 02'..it's got 110k..it has just become my daily driver..so the miles will come...lol !!! But as of now...NOTHING MAJOR !!! Just had the timing belt replaced...and of course,a couple of m/l busted speakers,2nd gen gps box fixed(normal s/c probs)..but thats it !!! I sold my 90 ls400 to my brother,with 372k...replaced an alternator,power steering pump and everything else was maintenance...so hope to get the same service,out of this car !!! ed

^ i heard some ---- like that too one day in my car.. and it was just the cd's hitting the wall.. so its prolly somthing.. in your trunk or the center consol..

...I just hit 128k and nothing major at all !!!...I did the timing belt/plugs around 90k and have replaced all the speakers in the car...everything else has been just regular maintenance stuff.Haven't had the trunk strut issues...oh almost forgot,had the nav box repaired last year..I had a ls400 that had 370k when I sold it and man I hate that I got rid of that car..lol !!!

got a 2003 and its at 91K miles.Just did a service on 90k,always has regular maintenance and haven't had any problems.

I just hit 50K today in my 03. I see a lot of these with less miles and more years. Is there any truth to the tale that cars driven so infrequently develop more problems from non-use?

In a word...Yes,
As a life long shadetree mechanic, and with SAE friends, most will tell you
to purchase the newest car you can afford. The mileage is important, but USUALLY not as important and the year. Everything ages and anything rubber or plastic, especially in the engine compartment, get old and more brittle. I have seen many times when someone bought an older car that an older person had in their garage and drove very little. The person who bought it was thrilled with the low mileage, then after a very short period of driving all kinds of problems (usually somewhat minor but still irritating and could leave you calling a wrecker! LOL!).
The SC430's are kind of a rare exception. Being produced for less than 10 years is one reason but the other is most people that purchase these cars appreciate it's reliability. This being one of the main reasons to purchase it over one of the German or English offerings. Typically someone who places high importance on reliability and longevity take very good care of their cars. So with this in mind, I would not hesitate purchasing any SC regardless of the mileage as long as that particular owner was the "rule" in my above statement and not the exception...
These really are great cars!
