Default Headers

Does anyone know if the weld issues with the S&S hearders been resolved? Or would a good approach have them rewelded before you imstall them.

Thanks

Definately go reweld before you put it on, you are going to wait a long time before you actually get "long-term" analysis on the 2ND batch or "revised" batch of headers produced by S&S.

Hi Tony, I know what you mean, but if you look in the GS forum there was a guy who installed the "revised" version of it and right after(like a day after I believe) found there was a crack in one of the headers.. so best bet is to reweld the orginal weld.. any welding place can do it easy.. 10 min job.

Is installation that bad? I fear this... I know you have to extend the drivers side 02 sensor.. but do you mean actually reaching to the headers that is a pain?

Tough choice from me as I have done personally seen the late model headers. If you come across the older version then YES-weld them. If other(s) report cracks on the new version then I would recommend a weld as well. Like Tony said, not easy to swap out.

honestly I dont know anyone besides Lee that can do that install in under 5 hours. Space is super tight. You need slim hands. As well as a good array of tools. I think I had to go to sears like 3 times. One for a swivel ratchet (I love this!), one for o2 puller, one for crows feet. If I didnt already have gear wrenches I would have to go back again. Also I didnt really read Lee's instructions so well and I ended up taking out the stock header with the coupler on. That wasnt fun. I think the headers crack because the s&s headers dont line up with the Y pipe/cat well at all. I think it would relieve alot of the tension if the Y pipe was altered to fit better.

Tools is a huge plus. So very true Tony. Plus it helps to have the years of experience installing headers and knowing how to pull them damn things out. That is the hardest part of the entire install as putting in the new ones takes no time at all.
When I pulled out my passenger side to repair the crack it took me around 45 minutes or so to remove and install-weld time around 30 minutes on top of that I think. Bam bam with the impact, pipes dropped, unbolt the header unit and slide it out. If only those OEM manifolds came out so easily.
