Default Ashtray door won't stay closed

Searched for this but didn't see it.
Mine had been a little inconsistent recently.
Now it won't latch at all, and I can't see how the mechanism was supposed to work (sorry, I do software, not hardware).

Hoping somebody can tell me how to fix it without using chewing gum.

Thanks!

I have the same issue too. Like every time I open the ashtray door, I pray that it would close. Some times it just takes like 3 mins for me the close it. Not sure how to fix it, anyone can shine some thoughts on this?

usually needs a cleaning, but can be a worn out part. Here's how to take apart the garnish for inspection and cleaning. ALWAYS use a covered or taped pry tool to prevent tearing or marring any nearby surface to prevent unnecessary damage.

If cleaning doesn't fix it (more likely not, I believe), the locking pin in the lip opening-closing mechanism might be worn or out of the place.
Take pics before you try to disassemble it or you will find it very royal pain in *** to assemble it back.

I had tried to fix the rear auxiliary box, but ended up buying another one to see how to put it back.

Funny this topic should come up. I recently broke the auto opening mechanism on my ashtray when I was disabling the TPMS. I think I like it better this way, where I can just freely flip up and down the ashtray cover. Also, my wife crams stuff in there and can at least partially close it when needed.

This may be a worthwhile route for you if it wont stay closed.

hello hello, NOOBY here. well i think i broke the small gear that provides the spring mechanical action and mine won't stay open and has no spring open and lock action now. does anyone know if the small gear is availalbe or do i need to replace the entire ashtray assembly? Also, any info on where to find either would be appreciated. thanks.
