Default Climate control discolored? Simple fix

As this appears to be a common occurrence on these cars, I picked up a spare unit to play with.

The good thing is that it appears to be a simple fix. I used my trusty Meguiars Plastx and after some polishing the discoloration was completely gone. See the pics. I also cleaned the unit on my car and it is as new.

Just an FYI for those that run into this.

so it was not the anti-reflective coating you just removed, correct?

Question

Thanks Pearlpower , for that info . . . someone earlier had suggested the use of alcohol but that makes me a bit nervous. I looked for the Meguairs product you mentioned at my local autoparts store, but it wasn't available, seems like it's the type of thing I may have to order online. I'll place my order in the a.m. . . . Will I need to remove my faceplate, though, to get mine to look as clean as yours (arrgghh!) or can I just apply the Plastx to the outside ?? . . . Thanks again . . .

Hmmmm, you know, I am not sure if that is the anti reflective coating or not that gets discolored, if it does have one. What I do know is that there was no issue with the display today with the top up and down in 107 degree heat. Crystal clear and I was pretty happy I did it as it looks as it should with no issues. No need to remove the unit from the car. Just clean in display installed in the car.
I purchased this one from Kragen Auto.

same thing happened to mine...i believe i read something on here about using Lysol antibacterial wipes, and decided to give it a try since i always use them. it worked! It takes some gentle rubbing but the wipes are soft and didn't leave scratches as far as i could tell

I had a similiar problem but mine was not as bad. It rather looked "cloudy" on the inside. My '02 warranty expired on July 1st - the dealer replaced it under warranty.

Thanx for the tip - though I hope I won't need it.

Pearlpower, can you please repost your pics. Just like gls24, I am having the same problem and looking for a solution. Mine appears that the gunk is behind the glass/plastic. Is there a way to remove the glass/plastic to clean the back side? Thanks!

Thanks Pearlpower! How do you pop off the faceplate on a installed unit?
