Hi all, This is normally a no brainier for this area on a car. The low miliage SC 300 is now just taking my son to college a couple times a week. I've got that throttle body gasket in the cart to purchase, but $60 is a bigger number paying for higher education and recall most of the threads from the pasts that this procedure didn't require anything but the plugs. Any incite would be appreciated.

If it is non vvti then you can generally reuse that gasket if it is in good shape, but if you take it off and it looks like the rubber coating has completely flaked off, then definitely replace it. If you get them from the parts store, that gasket is like $5 so I would get one and replace it. I would not spend $60 on that gasket.

I am seeing the toyota part 22271-46020 as $13 online, and the aftermarket one for $5 Beck Arnley 039-5039
so not sure if you are looking at the right part.

BTW what is VVTi ? We havn't had this that long so I'm not up to speed. My Mom gave it to him, original owner, dealer cared, so its worth the club. What I'm a big fan of is that GX of yours. I have an 06. I don't think there are many more vehicles put together better than those.

Its kind of hard to help without knowing the year or the part number of what you are looking at.
what year is your sc300? I am just assuming it is a 92-97 and non-vvti.
If it is a 98+ then it is vvti and it would be the more expensive rubber thing that is $50-$60.

On rock auto for a 1997 sc300 which your profile shows, it has 2 options.
one of them is the non vvti type, looks like this:
The other is the vvti kind that looks like this:
So it depends on what kind of engine you have, vvti or non vvti. generally only 98+ are vvti and I am not sure why its even showing up as an option under 97.
If you look at the cover on the top of your engine, it will say vvti if it is vvti, it also wont have a distributor. If you have a 97, you are pretty much in the non vvti camp.

vvti is variable valve timing, the sc300 got it in 1998 and there are some differences on the engine including some of the intake parts like the throttle body and Y pipe where that gasket goes. When the engine went to vvti, they changed those parts to make spark plug chages easier, and its a much wider metal and rubber gasket thing with 2 sets of bolt holes etc... you can see the difference in the post above and is probably why it costs more.

the vvti engine will say vvti on the top cover of the engine like this and a hump on the front right of the cover


a regular non vvti looks like this, notice no hump on the front right and there is a distributor sticking out the front left.



The GX is an amazing vehicle, the 06s are nice and they have vvti also lol.
The GX is actually built in japan like the landcruisers (its a landcruiser 120 technically), so it gets all the best goodies including an actual handbrake like most other landcruisers. the only problem I have with the vehicle is the back gate opens out towards the curb and I wish it went up and down like a 4runner or landcruiser 100/200, but other than jumping around it all the time and getting whacked by the door occasionally when it closes on me I really do love that vehicle, it is easily the most reliable vehicle I have owned.

Could any please verify if the throttle body on the 1997 SC 300 requires an E7 socket to remove as is needed on the variable valve TB.
