Cool Couple questions

I went back five pages hoping we had a thread for questions that don't deserve a full blown thread as other forums have. I have had my SC400 for about 2 years now and love it, but was wondering about a couple things.
1). Is the passenger door suppose to unlock when you use the keyless entry?
2). Are the doors supposed to automatically lock when you start driving?
3). What is the **** next to the center console on the driver's side? I attached a picture in case I'm not describing it well.

What in the world is this thing?

On my 98, if you press the unlock button on the transmitter once, only the driver side door unlocks. If you press the button twice in succession, both doors unlock. My doors do not lock when starting the vehicle. No idea what the ****-thingy is in your picture. It is not a factory item though.

Thanks for the info guys, sometimes in traffic I will just play with it and turn it, nothing ever happens. Perhaps it is the secret oil slick controls, and all the cars behind me are driving through a puddle of oil and wrecking.

@Zero
Yeah I wasn't sure when the automatic lock feature when you start driving really kicked off. Now it just seems like as far back as you can remember it was standard.

I think the auto door lock rolled out in the 2000+ Lexus. My 01 GS300 has the auto door lock, once all door are closed and the shifter is moved to D all door locks.

1) When you press the door unlock the once, it only unlocks the driver's side for safety. That's so someone with bad intentions can't jump in the passenger side and surprise you, carjack, etc. I did car stereo, alarms and phones in the 80's-90's, and this was a common feature on aftermarket systems too. On my '95, it works the same way if you unlock the care with the key.

3) Definitely an aftermarket item, Lexus would have integrated it more eloquently and used ***** that matched. You'll probably have to look inside the console and follow the wires to figure that one out. Sub Bass control is the most reasonable assumption, and the amp it worked with may have been removed. It's not a for car phone, OEM or aftermarket. They didn't have outboard controls.
