So bought my dad's 94' SC400 with 86k miles. He shipped it 2 weeks ago from Hawaii, and i'm picking it up in Seattle today. What should i do first in terms of modification? What should i know? Basically, what should someone who has never owned an SC400 know about the car, and should start doing as i build it.
get it clean and do any maintenance before modding the car in any major way. If you have the funds you could combine certain maintenance with mods like for example if the car needs new tires you might as well throw on a new set of rims. If the shocks are bad you could go straight to lowering it on springs or coils. There are some minor mods that you can do to the car that wont really affect anything though. The first thing i did to my second SC that i got just under a year ago was tapping into the cd changer lines and making an aux connection that i later attached a blutooth unit to so now i have blutooth in my car. Also replaced the plastic door handles with metal once off an early model LS and upgraded dome lights to LED. Next step is going to be restoring headlights and HID conversion once i have the time to do it.
Everyone has nailed the suggestions so far. Then, being a 400 I would just grab some mufflers, wheels, tint, springs/coils and if youre feeling crazy, W58 swap, and be done with it.
Spend as much time as you can on this forum reading up on the SC and learning as much as you can about it, then decide where to go with it from there. In the meantime clean her up, service it and enjoy the ride!
IF you have the time and the budget, try to take it to a mechanic for a full inspection. Those 100 billion point inspections that check every washer and rubber seal per say, followed by some new tires if you need them (unsure if you need seasonal tires due to your seasonal changes).
Change all fluids (or at least find the service history if you can). Do worry about the timing belt as it will be due soon but my advice would be either get the engine checked if possible and DO check underneath the car. Maybe rust? other issues? I would also (personally) change all bulbs of the car. Just depends on your budget to be honest.
Finally, just go for a drive. Rev it a bit and let that smile on your face never end. Enjoy your purchase and really get to know the car. From the pedal to the comfortable chair... Feel why this car is what it is and live a little =) Good luck and welcome to the club!
Thanks to everyone who has replied. I've been busy all week. Already put 800+ miles on my SC, in just under a week. Love it so much. It has new brakes, rotors, wiring. Tires are also new. Fluids were checked, and good. I plan on getting new wheels soon. The stock wheels just look small for the car's size.
