Staying with the IRS for this car. The Celica has a built up Toyota axle for that kind of excessive abuse. The SC will stay more of a rally car type car, instead of a take anything warrior. I'm hoping to take it on a long run this weekend, about 200 miles of back dirt roads, should be fun, see what I think of it on a long trek. Just need to find the time to swap in the 4.30 final drive soon.
The rear axle idea is probably not too hard to pull off. The rear subframe is pretty bulky and leaves a nice amount of space for an axle when taken out. The LCA mounting point already exists roughly where it should. Find an ol' Mustang 8.8 for cheap and see if it fits!
Even better, find an Explorer 8.8 with 3.73, LSD and disc brakes. You can find them all over for ~$150 which is what I paid the last time I bought one for my 66 Mustang. The pumpkin is slightly offset but it's not to bad in most cases.
Did about 175 miles of hard dirt road driving this past weekend, the car handles amazing, still quiet inside. The only casualty was the r.r. brake backing plate broke loose and annoyed the hell out of me for about 60 miles until we stopped to find the noise and finish pull the plate off the car.
Took the back roads home from Tucson to Phoenix a few weekends ago. Still loving this car, still tweaking things on it, like new front brakes with slotted/drilled rotors. Next mod, custom built receiver hitch with side plates to mount 2 d-rings. One of these days I need to get the 4.30 final drive swapped out too!
