Just bought 1992 Sc400, weird issues?
Hey everyone! Just got a 1992 sc400 for $2200 with 155,000 miles. Everything is in relatively good condition and I really just needed a car but I like this thing! However, I have a few weird issues and i'm not sure if they're normal. I've done weeks of research on them and I just can't come to conclusions. Here we go:
1st: If I floor the car from a stop(in PWR or regular) the car with shift at 4000RPM every time. When idling I can hit the red line, or if I put the shifter in 1st I can go past that. It's just when I floor it from a stop. Could this be shift solenoids? Low fuel pressure? Bad catalytic converters? MAF sensor? TPS? What's your thoughts. The car just seems kinda slow(I know it's not a crazy fast car, but it's slower than it should be)
2nd: If you open the hood you can hear a ticking that seems to be louder than injector noise, the sounded raises with the RPMs and seems to be coming from the drivers side of the engine around the valve covers and intake manifold. Do you think it could be valve lash or something else? I have a video of the noise.
3rd: The car takes a few seconds to start. More than average. Maybe 3 seconds? I know it's a small thing to gripe about but it has a brand new battery. Are the starters known to go out or could it be fuel related?

If you read a review back in the 90's of an SC400, it says "Start up the V8 and hear the 32 valves clicking happily" or something along those lines. It's normal. All 4 of my SC's have had it ranging from 140k to 320k.

From previous experience on other vehicles, anytime the car limits its RPMs before redline, it's usually the MAF sensor. You can track down a used one to test it, or purchase a new one. I would stay away from A/M MAF sensors as they are usually, what the parts store calls, "universal" and it may not be programmed correctly for the car.
