Default Upper Rear Control Arm Bushing Replacement?

I have a 1995 Lexus SC400 and the RH (passenger) upper rear control arm bushing....the one at the rear of the car is worn and making a really annoying clunk when driving over bumps.

I was quoted $1,225 to 1,348 here in Canada for the entire arm by Lexus and Toyota dealers, no thats not for installation that is just the part price.

I have spent a few hours trolling the net for info but found nothing definitive:

Can I just replace the bushing?

Any manufacturer recommendations, Daizen, Febest, Prothane?

Thanks so much the clunking is driving me crazy.

April

Prothane makes a rear arms bushing kit for the sc. Make sure the ball joints are good before installing new bushings.

I have brand new Prothane control arm bushings on my desk, and the quality looks really good. If you can take the arms off yourself and bring them and the new bushings to a shop you should save a lot of money. If not it will be pretty expensive. The kit includes the rear upper/lowers on both sides so do all of them. Then think about getting the front done too down the line.

Dude,

Assuming I have the correct part number (4877019025) for the rear (back wheel) upper RIGHT-SIDE control arm for your 1995 SC400, I see prices in the $580-$680 range from Lexus dealerships and others here in the Land of Freedom. This is for a complete arm including new OEM bushings (2) and ball joint.

http://www.lexussouthatlantaparts.co...877019025.html

Febest offers an OEM-style bushing, part # TAB-472RUB, for the rear upper control arms (you need two per side). However, if the ball joint on the rear upper control arm is bad then just changing the bushings won't solve all of your problems and you'll need to purchase an entire new rear upper control arm. The ball joint is not serviceable, unfortunately.

or

TAB-472RUB is listed by Febest as compatible for the following vehicles (including your 1995 sc400).

TOYOTA ARISTO JZS147 1991-1997, TOYOTA SUPRA JZA80 1993-2002, LEXUS GS300 JZS147 1993-1997, LEXUS SC300/400 JZZ31 1991-1997, TOYOTA ARISTO UZS143 4WD 1991-1997, TOYOTA CROWN/CROWN MAJESTA UZS143/UZS145 4WD 1991-1995, TOYOTA CROWN/CROWN MAJESTA UZS15#/GS15

Good luck

I just ran into a similar issue last month with my 1998 SC, i need the front end control arm and ball joint assembly replaced, and a non-dealer repair shop whom I trust told me the total repair will be about $2300. I beleive he said the part can only be ordered from Lexus, it's not a general part, just like my brake booster when it went 3 months ago. I've been getting bitten in the butt this year big time by Toyota only parts.

Dude,

There are re-manufactured brake boosters available from third-party sources for both the sc300 and sc400, all model years.

For example:

Thanks, great info to have for our 2004 GX, when it comes due! Our mechanic sent our booster to someone to rebuild it, and so we avoided paying $900 from Toyota for a new part.

Thanks so much freakness, JeffO and k7q,

The LH side rear upper control arm had been replaced by the previous owner. I did read that the ball joint is non-replaceable and if worn will need the entire arm.

I will speak to my mechanic (I'm not bad with a wrench myself but fear removing the upper arm might be a stretch for me) about the cost to replace bushing. Any opinion on using the factory style metal sleeved Febest bushing or the Prothane?

Thanks,

April

I would just get the complete rear prothane kit. Might be a bit costly to have a mechanic install the complete kit, but you will feel an improvement in a stiffer rear.

April dude,

The prothane bushings will result in more vibration but with a 'crisper' ride. The Febest is a copy of the soft OEM bushing.
