Valve clearance adjustment on the 1UZ engine is done by "shimming", this means you have to strip down to access the cams, measure each clearance with the correct procedure, consult the charts to find out how much shim is required for each valve, order/obtain the correct size shims from the dealer and then change the shims and re-measure all 32 valves.

This is not a job for the occaisional DIY'er, requiring access to the SC workshop manual or the Soarer Bible (PCMW, can I put the link in to TIF for the Soarer Bible CD-Rom ? , if not find it on the toyotaimportsforum ).

This is one job best left to a pro, my man at Powerhouse says it can take 8/10 hrs to do all the shims, less time normally as not all of them will require alteration.
