Default Shift solenoid code help

Hey guys I got my 1996 sc300 a couple years ago.. when I bought it the guy had covered up the check engine light with black tape.... couldnt even see it.... so that year I had a major tuneup done with the timing belt ect.... and the code that was present was "p0773" transmission shift solenoid...
I had the mechanic replace the solenoid, fluid and filter at the time. after clearing the code it past inspection and ran for most of 2012 with the light off.

of course now that my inspection is due again the light comes back on literally a week before i was going to get it inspected. I cant really afford to go have the same procedure done again this year....I spent all my money just getting the registration and a damn red light camera ticket payed off.... is there anything else I can do? I suppose to prevent this in the future the transmission would have to be rebuilt? thanks.

Have you had the engine light checked? If so is it the same code?

You could also unhook your battery for 5 min and it will clear the light and then drive it 30 miles so it can check all monitors and if the light did not come back on go to emissions.

Ok there are a few checks you need to do before saying its the egr valve.

1. find a hand vacuum pump and with the car running apply vacuum to the EGR valve the engine should start to run pretty rough or it die.

If it does not do anything then you may have a clogged egr port unbolt the egr valve and make sure the port is clear of any carbon and then check the egr tube that goes to the exhaust for carbon.

now if it does start to run rough you know that your EGR valve is good and has no carbon build up so you have to move on from there.

2. Now you can check the egr valve switching valve this is a solenoid that turns the egr valve on.
You need to unplug it and put power and ground to it and see if it clicks if not that is more than likely you problem.
if that seams to test good then you need to look at the egr modulator this is like a little filter and gets clogger and wont allow and vacuum flow to the egr.

Here is a diag. of the egr system its missing the switching valve though.

Sweet bro thanks for that info. I think this is a good sign its time to do the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, clean the throttle body and replace the o2 sensor.... anything else I might need to do for the top end tuneup?

seems pretty complete I would fix that egr code before anything else so you know its fixed and not anything you changed.
