Question Just Got my First SC

95 SC400 with only 53Kmiles. Black leather, love it so far. Bye to the BMW!! Couple of questions, if I may:

1. Gauge lights. I've heard nightmare stories about them burning out or similar issues. I really prefer my inside dimmer switch all the way on (past the "click"), but it is a considerably difference in the illumination. Do I risk a faster "burn" of these dash lights, and is it significant??

2. Nakamichi. Oh, where do I start. The changer skips over the slightest bump and I appear to have no right-rear sound. Common problems?? Any thoughts before taking it apart?

3. Seems to have a VERY SLIGHT hesitation on acceleration from a standstill. Nothing major, mind you, but just seems a little sluggish for just a second. I keep it in PWR mode. Any room for concern?

I look forward to sharing time with this group, seems a GREAT source for information - far better than the E39 group was for the BMW board (only about half of the time was spent on relevant info) I apologize if this is too varied a group of questions in one thread.

Mike

As for the sluggust acceleration/starts .... a bottle of Chevron Techron fuel system concentrate ($10 for 20oz bottle, treats a full tank) might help out, I use a bottle every 3000 miles, and as far as I can tell, it keeps the 93 SC400 running smooth as silk. Have heard good stories about the stuff from other people too. Says on the bottle it is usefull for stoping engine hestitation when you accelerate. It is recommended in Porsche service bulletins for routine matainance.

Dash Light Issue - check out:

Speaker - Mine went dead after I got the car last year, and I ordered a replacement, hooked it up, and it works fine. Probably just went dead like mine, common problem. www.parts.com has cheap OEM dealer parts.

Enjoy your SC! Beautiful car!

if u gonna change out audio, don't go OEM parts. If possible upgrade to aftermarket stuff... betta bang for the bux and u cant deny the drastic improvements in the sound.

As for the sluggish start, next time during maintenance, check out the throttle body (it may need to be cleaned out).
As for the black leather, you betta get some Lexol Cleaner/Conditioner or Zaino Leather in A Bottle because black is a pain to keep in good condition. It looks great new but wrinkles really kills the look.

For me Nakamichi is nice, and I don't need a feel to go aftermarket. When one of my rear speakers died I replaced it with the new OEM one. A lot of people will tell you to replace them with 6.5'' if you are looking for better sound. Hint the speaker covers are mounted to the rear deck, do not try to pop them. Only the sub cover pops out.

Seems to have a VERY SLIGHT hesitation on acceleration from a standstill. Nothing major, mind you, but just seems a little sluggish for just a second. I keep it in PWR mode. Any room for concern?
I believe this is normal. SC400 doesn't have power until 3000 rpms. Therefore you will feel the hesitation for a second, and then the car starts moving. The torque converter with 2800-rpm stall speed will fix this problem for you.

My take on this, I wouldn't worry if it isn't broken. If it will brake it will brake I don't think lesser illumination will prolong the life of the needles.

Congrats on your new ride & welcome to CL.

I don't know how much you are into premium audio systems, but if you are, you will want to ditch the entire Nak system. However, if DVD, big subs, and big amps do not appeal to you, fixing the stock system will not cost too much, as long as you do not have to replace the amp or head unit. The Nak system sounds good when working right. I pulled mine out after having the car 2 months since the CD changer & the amp were screwed. Replacing the stock components were more expensive than aftermarket, so you can guess what I did. Whatever you do, good luck & enjoy!
