If you replace your climate LCD, don't do this

I'm not gonna say the user id for obvious reasons, but a guy sent me this and he had replaced the lcd on it. Top things to note are (a) the cold solder joints (b) the lack of solder joints on some of the pins (c) the plastic still on the LCD, (d) the bent pins (NEVER bend the pins, it cracks the seal on the LCD and dries it out much faster decreasing the lifespan). I practically do this for nothing to help people out and there is just no reason to let your nice brand new LCD end up like this and with all the problems this can cause.

I do have to say those were horrible solder jobs as you said, and i will be calling on lextech fairly soon, my needles are dead...

How much do you charge to replace the LCD?

OLT, I've had a brand new replacement screen for mine since last year lol waiting to go on. If I sent you everything whats the turn around time?

Sorry I can't help. As you know we do not do biz in the model forums on CL. Just showing off an example of what not to do with the climate unit LCD if you DIY.
This is the only thing I have against DIY. There's a lot of people that say "hey you can do it just look at this" and they do and this is usually the end result. Sure anyone can do it, but results may vary. ;) :) Just try not to make it look like this one :D |
Yikes, that looks horrific. I came across this when I was doing a speaker board years ago and helped a great deal.

This is why I sent the entire LCD to you man. I hate doing any soldering, especially this intense. Too close too call. Great thread.

The LCD's have a tendency to misfire and have blank spots like a half formed number or something if they connections have any resistance in them because they are very low voltage. You have to get a nearly perfect solder joint on them to ensure low resistance. I've seen them LOOK good and still be cold joints...... much less these seen in the OP.

When I replaced my LCD, it looked much, MUCH worse than that. My pins were very bent. The solder joints were much better on mine, though. I like using 63/37 solder... works well for my soldering style. While I'd do it again, it was a total PITA. 2 years and running strong, however.

There are two different versions of the lcd I have posted on here in another thread. The heavier duty one of the two you have a better chance of getting away with some bending of the pins, but it is all luck of the draw like a car wreck. Sometimes everything goes ok if you just move an inch to the left on impact. With the LCD it's a matter of bending the pins without breaking the seal at the glass. The heavier duty ones has a less chance of cracking the seal. I won't bend ANY because it won't show up immediately so I won't know if I did any harm or not.

Do you know where the LCD display's can be purchased so I can try this myself?
Looks like there are some on ebay, are they normally decent quality? |
