Normal vs ECT Power Mode - 92 SC400
 

Hi All,

I've yet to drive my car in ECT Power mode. I know there was a post on this prior, but what do you guys normally drive on? Some people say gas mileage is the same on both modes and some say that you get lower mpg on power mode. I use premium gas all the time (high price, but I do it for my car).

Is there a noticeable difference in speed & power when driving in "power" mode?

I'd just like to know the advantages/disadvantages of each.

Also, is it okay to shift to the different modes WHILE driving?

I've never tested it by how many actual miles to a tank but I know when I switch from normal to power the mpg on the dash is less in power mode.

I change from power mode to normal while driving...

I guess the only way is to try! I wonder how much of a difference mpg will be between modes.

All it really does is change your transmissions shift points

You wont really see any difference in gas mileage its all still gonna be completely dependant on your right foot, the ect only changes the shift points and increase valve body line pressure if i remember correct.

I drive around with ect on constantly, Firmer shifts = less trans clutch slipping = less heat = longer transmission life

That's the exact same reason why I leave it in ECT mode all the time.

You can switch between normal and ECT whenever you want during driving.

the gas mileage is gonna be hardly noticable , its fun to drive in ECT you can ride first gear up close to red line if u wanted too(not that i recomend that),,,its a great way to have a little fun.

The sc400 takes premium gas anyways right? But for the ect I mainly put mines in normal on just dd. When I actually go out ill put it on ect mode. If it doesn't make a difference though maybe ill just leave it on ect mode too lol.

It changes only shift points. It will hold each gear longer and downshift more readily in power mode. That also happens to be better for tranny life so mine never leaves power.

Okay, just got back from driving in Power Mode, and here are my observations:

1) The car sounds louder when accelerating
2) The car is more peppy in acceleration, or at least gives me the impression that it is
3) Driving is more sporty/"rough" vs smooth

It doesn't "feel" like power mode is better for the transmission, but I'll trust you guys - lol..overall I'm liking it ..

It may seem that it's rougher on the transmission but it's the exact opposite.

When the line pressure is decreased for a smooth shift the friction plates are slipping. Sure it feels nice and smooth but it's causing wear and tear on the transmission. With the transmission line pressure increased the friction plates GRAB hard causing less wear. What you feel is more jerk in your drivetrain but it's better for the transmission.
