Default Sound of Crickets? Help

Hi All,

When I'm driving, my car seems to produce a cricket/chirping sound like cheep cheep cheep cheep. The sound seems to be coming from underneath the car. It also seems like it comes from both the left and right sides of the car, but I'm not 100% positive on that.

My observations:

1) The sound can be heard when the windows are open. The sound gets louder when I pass next to a solid object (another car, dividers on the highway, trees, etc.) or under an overpass.

2) If I close my windows, I cannot really hear the squeaking.

3) When I pass over a few bumps, sometimes I hear a chirp, not sure if related.

4) The antenna is down when I'm driving.

5) The A/C is not on when the car is chirping.

6) The sound doesn't appear when I'm braking, usually just accelerating or simply maintaining speed.

Any ideas? I know it could be anything, but maybe someone on here has experienced the same problem. I'm sure some of you will say put the radio up louder - lol.

Car: 61,000 miles, 92 SC400

Thanks for any advice/tips!

Heat shields on the exhaust. Just get under there, find the problem one, and rip it off. Problem solved.

scenforcer, have you had this same issue?

tony, i read through some posts of people that are having the same issue and they point the issue to brakes too, but the thing is, it doesn't happen at all when im breaking, it quiets down..

hmm, probably ask the dealer to check it out when i go for an oil change..

Question, is your car auto of 5spd? My car makes the same noise. It goes away when I engage/push in the clutch pedal. I'm pretty sure my problem is the throw out bearing. I bet the SOB who installed my clutch didn't grease the new pilot bearing. I'm curious to know what you find out.

Tabaka, my car is auto. I still have months until my first oil change so I won't be at the Lexus dealer any time soon. I guess it's not the end of the world. I won't have the windows down too much longer anyway due to Fall approaching. The sound is just annoying!

I see 2jz. I may show the dealer sooner than expected. Thanks all for your input.

Ya I had the same issue on both my SC's. But I guess a loose heat-shield sounds more like a tin can rattling than a cricket. I'd say you look at your heat-shields anyways, because if thats your problem its an easy and free fix. If not, then you can start looking into some of the more serious issues that others have mentioned..
