Hey y'all, I'm wondering whether is a good buy or not. The SC400 sounds like it'd be a good fit for what I want right now, but I am wary about the maintenance/repair costs and I don't know enough about this car to assess for myself the pricing I should have in mind when going to the dealership. KBB value is at around $10,300. From the photos, the car seems to be in excellent condition.

Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks much.

For that price you can get a newer one with less miles or get one that's fully built already.

First off welcome to the CL family! Enjoy your stay and learn a lot, use the search function and have a look in the STICKY...it's a lot of D.I.Y. information there. Moving on to the car, it looks very clean and the mileage is great, but I would not pay 10,9k for it. No way in the hell! But that's just me, as others have stated you could find one with some MODS, and wheels for less. And if you're lucky, for about 3-5k more, you could find a clean swap already. Look in the vehicle classifieds. Next, I would figure out what your plans are for the car. If you're looking at a swap, or something to build I would look for a cheaper SC. It would be crazy to buy that car in that condition, at that price and tear it down for a build if that's your plans? Of course you could try and sell some parts off it, but you would never get your money back. Either way, it's your decision and I wish you all the best! Keep us posted.

That's a great looking 92 but you can find 98+ models with similar miles at that price. I do love a survivor vs. a restored car but the 5spd auto / VVTi engine combo of the newer cars makes a very compelling argument when you're looking at cars in that price range.

great car and great mileage, make an offer of about 8 grand and go from there.

Its worth it IMO but i dont have that kind of money to put out so id low ball him. His asking price is a little too high i think.

2BENVD has the right price range of 8K according to KBB private party price. I still think 8K is to high as you have state in your post about your concerns of maintenance/repair costs which should be included in the final (reduced) cost of the Sc. Find out what has or not been done as far as maintenance on the Sc. Good Luck! the pictures provided, of the sc look clean/well maintained.

Plus with mileage that low and the year, I wonder how long the car just sat for, I would almost be worried about bad seals, as I have to imagine it sat for many years at some point. Hopefully it was just a Sunday "Go to church car". Do you know the back story on the car?

Don't get me wrong, looks like a really nice, clean car, but for a 92, even with that low mileage it should be between $6-8,000 at the most. I've seen newer SCs with fewer miles than that sell for cheaper.

Wow, thanks for the welcome all the great responses!

So I checked out the car today and talked to the dealership owner. He's sticking to $10k as the lowest he'll go, unfortunately. The car is a single owner, however--dude apparently had a stroke in '08 so the car's been sitting in his garage since.

I liked the car a lot when I went in...sounds like I need to decide whether it's worth it to me to overpay $2,000...Please someone talk me into this...

The car is worth whatever it is worth to you. KBB serves as a guideline as does everybody's opinion on this forum. Most people wouldn't pay that much for that car but that doesn't make you crazy if you decide to do so.
I agree with the other posts in this thread that a 1998 to 2000 SC400 with comparable mileage is in that price range. I personally prefer the newer body style as well. Nonetheless, you have to decide what the car is worth to you and then make your decision. You likely have time to decide as it is doubtful that that car will sell fast.
