My LED Door Handle Mod
#48
I wonder if this can be made to work with the push-start and smart-entry system I'm looking to install in my car.. Have the door-handle lights light up when the car is unlocked as I approach it.

Thanks, I have a Viper 2-way paging alarm.
That would pretty cool feature. Looking at the diagram, the smart-entry sends a signal to the door switch, not sure if it just unlocks the door or also allows the dome light to turn on as well.

Here are some pictures and videos of it installed, sorry didn't take any during the process. I also have the viper 5901 2-way alarm. The installation is pretty much straight forward with what Luxor has posted.
One of hard part was to run the wire through the rubber hose to the driver side kick panel area from both sides. The second hardest part of the mod was to run a relay for the dome light supervision wire. You need to run a relay for this because I ask this guy that do alarms and he told me to put a relay. He said the relay deals with higher amp to low output or something like that. It is just safer in my opinion to do so.
Just look up dome light supervision in google pictures and you can see diagrams of it. You also need to figure out if your system is a positive or negative trigger because the relay will be wired differently. Wiring took me at least a good 10hrs or so to research and do it. This is only because I didn't setup my alarm, a shop did it before and I had to basically do trials and errors to figure it out. My recommendation is to get dome light supervision to work first then connect LEDs of what ever you need to light up when you unlock the doors.
So now everytime I unlock my doors or open them, the handles and dome light will light up for 30 seconds. You can see this in the videos I uploaded.
Once again thanks Luxor for this great idea.

Koolcat, nice job! I agree, getting the wires routed is the hardest part of doing this. The LEDs you used look very bright!
No relay is needed if you are only using the dome light supervision wire to power the LEDS since LEDs generally have a draw of around 20mA and my alarm can handle up to 200mA output.
Thanks for posting the pictures and videos, I bet your car gets a lot more attention now at night!
