97 SC400 p/s problem
Guys,
Car has been garaged for 2 years and this newbie is trying to get it back to being road worthy. Discovered today that p/s system had actual p/s fluid in it so I drained the system and filled it with Dexron III ATF. Prior to replacement there was moderate squealing which I was able to lessen significantly by the normal extreme turning from left to right and back. After replacement with ATF it makes an awful screaming squeal and requires extreme effort to steer. Turning back and forth doesn’t help. Wondering if p/s pump may be bad or if I did something really stupid when replacing fluid.
Any way to check that the pump is or is not functioning? Don’t want to purchase replacement pump only to discover that existing pump is OK and I definitely am not experienced enough to rebuild the pump.
Thanks,
