A lot? That is a common misconception.
The VVT-i engines have a variable intake cam gear. Instead of putting an aftermarket cam gear that can only be set to a certain degree the ECU adjusts the stock cam gear to advance or retard the valve overlap.
The other noticeable difference is with the Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS) system. This means nothing if you do not plan on removing the stock throttle or decide on using a standalone computer.
Going turbo on either the 2JZ-GE or the 2JZ-GE VVT-i requires the exact same parts and the exact same amount of work.
