is it posible for the crank to need to be turned a full 360 for it to be at the tdc that the cams are at?

That sounds correct to me. Crank on 0, cams pointing up at the notches in the cam cover back plate. Distributer, I dont know about markings, but the rotor needs to be pointing to number 1.

Sounds right to me. Have fun getting that crankshaft bolt loose without fudging up the timing (assuming your're not using an impact gun). Also have fun keeping the timing-set when installing the T-belt tensioner

hell the only hard part really on it was the balancer bolt i tryed all sorts on it tryed a braker bar with a 5 foot pole well guess what we broke the braker bar lol then we got a 500 foot pound impact gun didnt work went to a 600 didnt work then an 800 and still didnt work i had to grined the head of the bolt off to get the tension low enuff to spin it out then had to get a new bolt that bolt was a true pane

Balancer bolt/Crankshaft bolt same thing. Should have given you the heads up to hit it (bolt) with a blow torch until it starts to smoke (it was late, I forgot ). Then whap it with the impact gun (or in my case a 6' extension on a breaker bar )...Toyota puts those SOB's on TIGHT!

You can use the starter to break them loose. Wedge the breaker bar against something solid, then crank it for a second.

i know this is old but yes id like to know how to find TDC as well !!!

i also have one mark on my cam gears which i line up with the notches on the backing plate....
As for the crank pulley. it was aligned to 0 as well...

is that how it should be???

i will be seeking to change my distributor O-ring soon and i havent checked to see if the distributor was aligned to 1 in the cap when the markings on the cam gear are aligned to nothes on the backing plate..

my timing is definitely out though as we speak..

It sounds like your cam and crank is correct if you are seeing the crank at 0 and the cams pointing to the notches in the cam cover.

The distributor you need to align and insert when the motor is at TDC, you need the crank at 0 and cams pointing at the notches to inert it correctly. See below

you turn the crank to zero, then check that the cams marks are pointing straight up at the notch on the covers.
If they aren't, you turn the crank around one more time and then check again, now they should be pointing at the notch in the covers. if it isn't after the second turn something is wrong.

sometimes a picture is the best, and also has the distributor installation part.
