it might sound dumb but if it is are the ratio's that far off? would it not be better and or cheaper to build your 5sp.

since the 6sp just became "unobtainable" once this run of stock is out and the price went to $15,000 per transmission............. I'm thinking I could build a hell of a 5 speed with $15k.

I thought the latest word was that they were back "down" to $5600

indeed, down from the $15k from before...still quite a lot for but that's just for the tranny. Need a clutch, driveshaft, rear end....probably close to $10k in the end for everything

r154 can handle the power but for how long is the question , ask me how i know for im on my second one already

the problem with the r154 and higher hp levels is , you cant launch 1st gear and be very careful slamming 1st to 2nd under full boost , you will shatter the thrust washer and destroy 1st and 2nd gear shifter fork.. thats what happened to mine last year..

you can get the marlin crawler parts and put in and they would remedy the situation to a point or you could send it to marlin crawler for their full race build for around 1300 and they gurantee holding 800ish + rwhp without breakage but when you calculate the cost of a soarer r154 at around 1500 plus another 1k give or take for some sort of build up then getting a solid twin disk clutch to handle the power you could almost go 6sp with a rps 6puck setup and be done with it for lightly used v160 can be had now in the 2800 to 3500 range

IMO I would save for a Getrag. A used one isn't but 3,000-3,500 in good condition with no grinds. The thing about the r154 is you have to buy a different slave cylinder, bellhousing adapter, half of the MKIII driveshaft, shifter extension (unless of course you get all of this from a Soarer) and you have to get a 1JZ flywheel and all of that adds up quickly. You spend almost as much as you would on a Getrag. And if you get the Getrag you get an extra gear, and the ability to throw pretty much any amount of power at it

Oh and to answer the original question, yes the Getrag is that much stronger. The stock W58 can't hold 350whp. (some people have good luck with them and see ~400whp). I would know. I broke 2 of them. The R154 (as stated above) can reach a limit of about 750 but that's being easy on it. The Getrag 6 speed can hold 900whp RELIABLY with the right clutch setup. That transmission can be put in first and you can reach full boost in first and slam it into second without thinking it might break.

Oh and along with the stuff you have to buy for the Getrag, don't forget the $90/bottle Getrag Gear Oil

Every single person i've known with a R154 has had this happen, and none of them where making more then 300whp

even had some of the marlincrawler upgrades..

R154's are definetly stronger then w58's but sometimes i think people think they are going to be able to beat on the R154 without any issues and that's just not true, 1st and 2nd are definetly weakpoints, probably 1st gear mainly.

500hp is childs play for a getrag. I have seen these transmissions take unbelievable abuse. You'll snap drive shafts and axles before you break a v160. I'm not saying I haven't seen them break, of course they do. But it take a TON of abuse to do so. On the other hand I've seen r154s just fall to peices from a good firm 2-3 shift on a 450hp 7m. Of course you can build them, but the cost of a build you're almost at a v160. There's also GM options out there (t56), they're just not as popular for whatever reason.
