Default Temp guage question.

I just picked up a new sc300. I dont drive the car far, just to and from work. (so far). It seems to take about 15 min for it to reach the first bar on the guage. It seems to stay right around 1 1/2 bars for the most part. BUT it moves around. Some times it will drop to 1 bar and stay and sometimes it will raise to a little over half on the guage and then it will drop again. It gets warmer if im not driving of course and goes down as I go but sometimes it will do it when Im driving so it isnt consistant in any way. Im wondering what the most likely problem would be. Water pump going out? Im mainly worried its a BHG. there isnt chocolate milk stuff in the coolant or coolant in the oil. and no white smoke at start or while driving. I dont smell coolant either. Any advice would be great. thanks in advance.

Sounds like a t-stat, water pump or even radiator flush. I would do all three, make sure your radiator isnt cracked.

The first things I do when I get a new car are upgrade brakes, water pump, radiator, tires, oil, etc. plus Id like to get one with a little more cooling potential. I Wouldnt replace a good stock one with a stock one.

Well, since you like to be proactive about your maintenance, if one of those parts is the water pump, then you might as well go ahead and swap the timing belt and its tensioner, as well as the front main seal. You'll kick yourself later if any of those parts were to need repair and you missed the opportunity of being 90% there already.
