Default cams valves...help please

I was hoping you could help me out. I worked on cars for 6 years mainly bmw, merc, and vw. My dad has been working on them for much much longer.....only now he is 75 and really alcoholic! I have a Chiltons book from library. Allready set the cylinder head on. Put the cams in like it said, tightened the bearing caps. The book said to rotate the cams then loosen up the cap bolts then tighten back down again then repeat this step.? Well he showed up buzzed as usuall and said that was rediculous. So as it is now ready to check valve clearance......sorry hears more info.
93 sc300 2jz ge engine blew head gasket, not too bad though, resurfaced the head.
The book says to check the adjustment on top dead cntr 1,3,5 at this point he says well do it my way....i know this is criticle.
Please excuse my ignorance here. Any help with the proper procedure would be greatly appreciated.

u got the right idea pretty much, the sequence the book is referring to is to take the preload off the cam from where the lobes are pressing against the valve springs and then rotate and re tighten the caps where there was a preload after you rotated the cam. the important thing here is to make sure the caps went down even and were torqued properly. if you cant find the sequence just search a toyota tsrm for the 2jz and that should pop up a pdf file with the toyota manual so you can follow the steps accordingly. good luck.

I put back all cups in proper order, and machine shop repaced valve guide seals. It would have been nice to have had the cams in it and got a full vave job, but I got laid off work and broke! I wire brushed top of block with my cordless drill and did the tops of all cylinder heads as well...rotating them up. Haven't put timing belt on yet and dad wasn't feeling well so we put it off for tomorrow.

The crappy part was my torque wrench doesn't go down to 26ft lbs so had to tighten cam bearings evenly by hand.
