high NOX, best bet would be the cat?

awhile back my cat's heat shield tore off, i noticed between the cat and the head shield, that there's this cloth material, similar to the packing within mufflers. is that to help the cat get into proper working temperature? or is the cloth just to reduce metal rattle from the cat and the head shield?

my car's idle is also at 1k, ill probably adjust my ICV and then re time it again.

what do you guys think?

most likely a lean A/F ratio. Check that you don't have a vacuum leak somewhere, as that would also cause a high idle. Should be idling around 650-750ish

 

clean your egr and like he said check all the vacuum stuff.

 

take the egr pipes off and clean them out they get filthy and replace the cat. GL! F-SMOG btw...lol

 

That happened to me last year. $2000 in repairs (my mod money) and I passed. Good Luck with your next smog. I hope yours is a minor fix.

 

do you think by replacing the cats it will fix it? I am only questioning the replacement of the cat because the low hydrocarbons.

 

The cat is a guess at this point. Fix what you know is broken...idle too high. A lean burn will cause your failure and a vac leak will do both. Watch your idle closely and sray carb cleaner around all the hoses and mating surfaces in the intake. If the engine inhales any it will change the idle speed and you will know the location of th leak. Service the egr anyway you look at it. Verify your timing as that will thrw the reading off also.

 

hydrocarbons are usually burned with the primary cat, the secondary cat burns NOX

 

your other numbers are too good in some areas. you just have to get the right balance. I would think egr clogged or running too lean. maybe your timing is a little advanced? if you retard it some for the test you can lower your nox numbers a bit at the expense of some of the other areas but looks like you have room to work with. alot of smog techs/mechanics will try this on the spot when they see numbers like that.

 

right now i know my idle is high, ranging from 900-1200.

my car smells like gas fumes.

my cat never crackles or pops like how it used to. [before i would shut the car off right after driving and it would crackle/pop] i then figured out that im suposed to let it idle a bit so it can cool down properly. but i re-did it my old habbit of just turning it off after, and it doesnt crackle anymore.

ima check the egr valve, check my vacuum lines, replace the cat.

how would i go about adjusting the idle? ICV (idle control valve)?

i also have a bfi with a HKS filter, ill probably swap that with a stock air box as well. or would that not change anything? i recently reset my ecu but no real difference.

exhaust piping is completely stock, but i really think my secondary cat doesn't get as hot as it supposed to becuase the heatshield/packing is gone...

oh yeah, im also ranging like 200-250 miles a tank

 

check the egr valve, like above said, and then check the modulator for the EGR. make sure all the lines are good. if you have a vacuum pump you can check to make sure the EGR valve is functioning. have the car running, and pump some vacuum to it, if the engine dies, then your passages are good. then make sure you are getting vacuum to the valve, and to the modulator.

 

also the idle control valve is computer controlled, so no adjustment there. you can adjust the idle itself from the throttle i believe.

 

you dont need to spend money to do all that stuff, from your numbers the cat is definitely working. just dial the timing back a little bit. you will probably pass.
