Dramatic turn around!
Hey everyone. long story short, I'm a freshman in college this year so i had to take my beloved SC off the road.
i'm living on campus and we can't have cars. however,
i've been thinking recently about joining the army national guard and balancing it with being a full time student. for many reasons:
$ aid to school loans
experience
something to put on future resumes that the next guy won't have
i've always had a love for the military so i dont see why not.
and the change around is this, the campus police said i can have an exception to the parking rule which.......means I'LL HAVE MY SC BACK!

i just figured i'd let everyone in on the new plans.

1) my education is my first priority...it costs 40k a year to go here i really can't waste that money ya know?
2) i also don't want to have to miss a semester or something because of it but we'll see, they are generally flexible to work with you
all in all i can't wait to get started but we'll see.
im in the guard, just want to let u know be prepared to get f'd! if your plans are to get college money then they will do that, experience you will get, them taking atleast 3 months out of your time a year you bet ya. if u want to be in the military great kudos, but to think your going to juggle it around your life without interuption WRONG!!! good look either way but i would say if you are not 100% willing to go thru the bull**** that they are gonna dish out to you then find somewhere close to camous to put the vehicle and drive it then there is always pale grants and student loans to help out with the bill and by the way that recruiter is gonna lie lie lie they are the best salesmen in the world lol

and don't worry about modding the SC, i have scholarships and such to bring it down from 40k, but all in all its $ i'd rather not throw away to get my education...
my goals are to go to law school. and i figure by joining the guard will help out my chances significantly as will any military service. so with that said, i'm really not interested in a military career but just to do my service and take with it the experience and the benefits that come with it. i'm hoping that by doing this i'll be giving myself a more promising future. but i really really dont know if i can take time off of school for this or not, so its really up in the air, i'm having lunch with my recruiter tomorrow so i'll have to let everyone know.
From what my Guard buddies tell me, once you join up school becomes a second priority. Most of them quit school, put in their time, and resumed it later. Not only that, but with the escalating situation in Afghanistan, who knows how many troops they're going to be calling up. You might end up somewhere you don't want to be. Sounds to me like you'd be better off just doing some local community service/charity/volunteer work for resume building, getting a part time job, loans, etc. if you need cash, and studying your *** off for the LSAT if law school is what you really want to do. Just my two cents. Either way, best of luck.
My university didn't allow freshman to have cars on campus. But, you could become exempt with an employer from home or a note stating that you had certain responsibilities to be present at home for. Lots of my friends did it. I just parked my car right outside of campus at a Wal-Mart.
first off to everyone, thank you for the well thought out responses. this is why i love the forum...not only do i celebrate my love for cars here, but we have a wealth of knowledge to help us out with personal things as well...cause afterall this thread wasn't about the car. we all know that.
anyways, i've talked to a lot of people, many best friends of mine, and their reasons match CL as to why i shouldn't do it. i'm a full time student here at assumption, and that needs to be my priority...i felt like i needed something different in my life but the truth is i can be as different as i want without trying to do something such as military...i've been convinced that i was being rather naive in thinking the military would mix with school and get the best of both worlds. it was perfect in theory, but not so much in practice.
so i just want to thank my CL family for havin my back in this situation because i most likely would have made a regretful decision.
much love fellas

LoL j/k.. Good luck with everything! I would make education first priority, and keep it that way.
