quick question about the 1996 5-speed models registered under 1997 models

232 5sp manual SC300's were made in 1996 and 120 in 1997, you said you contacted Lexus and they responded saying the 120 97's only included ones made in the year of 1997, does this mean the 96 models with the 97+ exterior are a part of the 232 produced? that would mean less than 232 1996 models are actually made with the 1996 body and would be split with the 1997+ body. also, on the door tag where it says NO. _ _ _ what exactly does this mean? on your list, the numbers aren't chronological with the production months, but rather the last 7 of VIN are chronological

I would assume the production number correlate to the model year which never aligns with the actual calander year. A 97 is a 97 and a 96 is a 96. Just as there are 99 made in 98 and so on, another important date is sale date which also doesn't matter against model year.

The door tag # seems to mean something else on their production line. It has nothing to do with any chronological order of the 1 of 120. The 97 models are those that came out from the factory as 97 models which means could have been manufactured from August 1996 . That means the actual 1997 model manufactured in 1997 are even less than 120. That is what makes the 1997 manufactured 5speed SC300 rare being the last year of the manual transmissions for the SC300 .

I would assume that when you say 1996 model .. they start counting from the August 1995 production. Just like the 1992 Model started in 1991. So when you say 235 for 1996 that should start from August 1995 to July 1996 production.

The VIN number is not also a chronological order of just the 1 of 120 that is why there are spacing / gaps . In between are the automatics made on those months and year.

I guess you are right in that term when you talk about model 1997.

Though this thread is more about the LAST YEAR the SC300 5 speed were made .

Aug 1996 to Dec 1996 production were 1997 models but not the last year they were made. Technically they are production of 1996 .




The OP (Original Poster) on the first post specifically said "Manufactured In 1997 and not model 1997 " . That is why we separate the 1996 production but are 97 models on the list.
