Parking light (city light)

Is parking light on SC400 equivalent to the commonly used term city light? I'm trying to replace the stock bulb with a new and whither one. The manual says I should use a bulb with a wattage of 5W. However, the ones I see on the web are mostly for 8W application.

Link at optauto.com

Can anyone tell me whether any of these are going to work. And which one should I use? Looking at the first two of the list, one has a big bulb and the other has a small bulb. Which one fits on SCs?

lex400sc 03-24-02 11:51 PM

Sylvannia's website has a bulb sizer: http://www.sylvania.com/bin/carApp/c...SC400&x=23&y=6

I wouldn't overload the wattage by more than 70%.

The bulbs finally came, but I can't seem to get the old bulbs out of the socket. I can't reach them or see them. Is there any other parts that i have to remove in order to fit these in?

Legends6spd 04-23-02 09:50 PM

i neva understood the parking/city lights. which one are they?
the one rite next to teh low beam?

1BomexLex 04-23-02 11:17 PM

turn you light switch one click not two
and the parking/city lights will be on
they look really awsome in hyperwhite
i did it in mine..... i always sit in parking lots with mine on
just cause it looks really cool

on the drivers side you might have trouble with the battery
but its a really small plug... .... you really have to feel around for it
and play with it without actually seeing it

Legends6spd 04-24-02 09:36 AM

one click turn means it's the lights that barely does ANYTHING
it's so friggin dim!

yah, i needa get this one replaced alright. what a waste of a light!
trudremz16. where did u buy ur hyperwhite? plz help!

also, my friend's trying to hook me up with a HID kit + install for only like $300-400?
if i get that, would it solve my dim parking light issue? or is HID only for the low beams? as you all can tell, i'm clueless

hellasboy 04-24-02 09:54 AM

I attached a pic of the rear of the light. You can see where two wires go into a plug that looks like 2 pencils on top of each other. This is your city/parking lights.

HID will only effect your low lights... drastically :D
You can also buy LED replacements for the city light bulb, they are supposed to be a huge improvement over regular 194 bulbs but I have yet to test a set out (can't find any retailers that carry white LED bulbs)

yeah...they are dim
but thats just casue they are parking lights
just to add a subtle look to them at night i guess
not supposed to add visibility
i like them hyperwhite
i jsut got them at a performace shop around town
that has all sorts of bulbs...

lex400sc 04-24-02 11:28 AM

Parking lights are way too dim, they don't even accent the headlight at night because the glare from the low beams drown them out. I'm considering an LED bulb conversion just because I haven't found a regular incandescent bulb that is remotely bright enough. I went to Kragen and bought the 194 and 194LL bulbs and they are just as dim as the 168 bulbs designed to go in. Maybe I should just remove that plastic tubular capsule in the parking light so I can use a 10 watt bulb. Legends6spd take note of the brand of ballast and bulb before buying the HID kit. Some Korean HIDs out there aren't worth even $300 and some German HIDs can be well worth $300.

I bought a 194 LED light made by APC that claimed to be bright. Well, I stuck one in and had a normal amber 194 bulb in the other. The APC one turned out to be A LOT dimmer than my normal 194 bulb. Both were amber in color (I like ambers :) )

Anyhow, I returned the APC LED bulb after that.

anyone know if these are bright? They're from www.autodynamic.com I've also seen these at Autofreaks.

howiedoit, did you ever get the parking light upgrade?
are there any on ebay that's worthwhile?

Deceptik1 08-19-02 05:49 PM

Go to Ebay and check out the bulbs Terrshop sells. I always buy my bulbs from them and have used the 194 led bulbs in the gauge cluster of my Trueno. The led bulbs make my cluster look like the newer lexus gauges.

ChronoJ1,

If you've got small hands (or a *****load of patience) just stick your hand in between the airbox and the battery and try to look for the parking light HOLDER (the bulb is connected to a holder, not the housing) which has two wires going into it. Twist anticlockwise (from memory) to remove.

If you can't be bothered doing that, you'll have to remove the airbox and battery to access them. I found it much easier to access the lightglobe holders when I removed the battery, but I didn't have the right tools to remove the airbox.

I put blue 194 lights in mine. There kinda cheap, but I thought they looked cool. I just used a pair of plyers to lightly grip min cuz I cant get my fingers in there. Then they just twist right out.

Or, worse comes to worse, remove the entire headlight housing. Very easy, unscrew the fender, and there are two nuts which you will have to undo. Then one screw under the hood and they pop out. Here's an idea for anyone interested, LEDs!

Legends6spd 12-10-02 12:19 AM

OMG, sxylxy, is that your PARKING/City Lights?
tell me that's photoshop. how in the world did you get it that bright. Tell us what LED those are and where to buy 'em.

My PIAA's extreme whites have been kinda disappointing so far. Give us the info plz!

lex400sc 12-10-02 03:02 AM

Damn! That's bright and BLUE!! I wonder how those look with my BMW HIDs... Do they sell those in white?

EmeraldLexuSC3 12-10-02 04:06 PM

Philips 'Bluevision'

Philips just came out with a "Blue Vision" 168/5W wedge bulb to match their "Blue Vision" headlamp series. Finally a match in colour between the two. I have tried LED's, Hyper whites, HID look alikes and I have been disappointed with them all.

Legends6spd 12-12-02 07:56 PM

come on now sxylxy, you can't just post that pix and not leave ANY info http://www.autopia.org/forums/images/smilies/nono.gif

mine burned out. help.....

Talking about parking light....mine is dead due to my cousin's stupidity. He said he would help me hook up the 97 foglight for my 97 conversion, ended up he parallely hooking it up with the parking light or the corner bumper light. They were overloaded and burned out. Now i don't have my parking light anymore. Does any one here know how to fix this? I noticed there was a burned odor in the car after this stupidity happen. I was thinking if there isn't a solution, i probably have to run new wires fromt he rear parking light and route them to the front, since my rear parking light still work. This is definitely an electrical prob, is there a fuse or special module operate these light? I don't want to open up my wholedash and smell out the location of this module...hehehe.. Anyone with that "over price bible"(repair manual) please help....Thankyou...
