Alright i have the power steering whine and fluid is gushing upward from the reservoir if i remove the cap.

I am assuming i need to replace the power steering pump, is this correct?

Also here they say you need to replace a hose as well. Do i need to replace this hose and where is it?

 

make sure you clean the solenoid screen first. im having trouble with my power steering as well. i just replaced the pump and it still whines. i havent cleaned that screen out yet think that is the cause. check this thread

I know how to bleed the system and i'm going to do that no biggie. But I've never worked on the steering rack. Where is it? How do i get to it? and where is the sensor i need to remove and clean.

I'm going to clean both filters and change the fluid. If that doesnt work, then i'll replace the pump.

 

look down at the return line going into the rack there is a sensor underneath it. i believe it has a red and a black wire coming off it. follow Sherns instructions to remove it. you need a large crescent wrench. the screen is on that sensor. if i have time today im going to clean mine

 

UPDATE: I noticed a pool of fluid on the ground. So I have a leak somewhere in the system. From the looks of it the drip starts somewhere right underneath the ps pump. When i turn on the car, air comes right out of the reservoir. I am assuming where ever its leaking, air is entering the system from their. BTW the fluid is still bright red.

And from my service records. it says the car had the power steering rebuilt with the toyota kit back in 01.

 

Nine times out of ten it is the reservoir screen that is clogged that doesn't let enough fluid go through the pump. You can get a new reservoir for around $125.00. Replace it first and see what happens. I learned this the hard way after replacing the pump first.

I think the leaking is coming from between the alt. and the side of the car; so its prob my ps pump. How many o-rings do i need to replace and what are their part numbers?

 

there are two screens you should try cleaning before you buy a new pump. clean that screen on the sensor and also the one on the reservoir as stated above. also is this on your 400 or 300?

 

I think i took care of the problem. I cleaned off ALL the old fluid that dripped everywhere, then i was able to find a line of leaking fluid. Turns out it was leaking from the hose that connects the reservoir to the pump. So i removed the reservoir and used compressed air to blow stuff out of it. Then i went to an auto parts store and got pressurized fuel injector hosing for both lines to the reservoir. Replaced them and clamped everything down and its all good now.

btw it was on the 400 and also i used 3 clamps on the hose from the reservoir to the pump. One on each end and one in the middle to stop the cable from caving in on itself since it makes a sharp turn.

 

What is the size of the return hose? I am having this problem too. I want to make one trip to the parts store when the car is still drivable. Thanks.
