I took the advice from the forum and bought a couple of '97 Supra TT mounts, as both my originals were torn. The question I have refers to the parts in the attached pic. The original is on the left---in the middle is a 1/8" thick black steel plate that was sandwiched between the original mount and the aluminum casting.

On the right is the TT mount. Do I still use this black steel plate? --or if I do will the engine sit too high in the engine bay, and the clutch fan may not sit in the plastic fan shroud correctly.

I don't know what the compressed height difference is between the two mounts (especially since the Supra ones are much stiffer than the original SC300 ones). So-- measuring the static height won't help much.

So-- I'm asking you guys that have dropped these in. Did you use the black steel plates when bolting on the Supra mounts, or just use them out of the bag and bolted them to the aluminum brackets?

 

You have to use a new bracket for the 93-96 TT mounts or else the motor will sit higher. If you use the NA mounts, the old bracket can be re-used. I think the 97-98 Supra TT mounts will not make the motor sit higher with the old bracket.

And 1sxyrxy I believe that the Supra mounts are probably a little bit stiffer than the cushy Lexus ones.

 

I decided after doing some height measurements of the '97 mount vs. the stock SC300 mount -- to eliminate those black steel plates. Static (unloaded) height measurements of the two mounts were within a 1/16" of each other.

The only recommendation I can make is to leave both mounts off the engine when going back in until you are right over the cross member pads that they bolt onto. I bolted on the drivers side mount before lowering the engine/trans into the engine bay, and it was a ***** getting the engine past the electrical connector on the top of the steering rack --- but we finally did it.

So I cannot say for sure (until I fit the stock clutch fan and shroud) but it appears that these mounts work fine with the stock aluminum motor mount brackets.

for the guy who asked why not just re-fit stock SC300 mounts, all you have to do is put them side by side and you see the TT Supra mount is superior in design and strength. They are much stiffer, and even though it may mean a little bit more vibration, I'll live with that. Both of my OE ones were torn just about all the way through, and I believe the Supra ones will last a lot longer. This-- in a stock engine with a 5-spd. I'm not drifting the car or pumping out 2-3 times the h.p. --- I just want long life and reliability.

 

Just a final post on the subject. Yes the 1997 TT Supra mounts without the steel plates (as fitted to the original mount) work great, and the fan sits just as it should in the shroud-- so there is no installed height problems.

Driving the car now-- and yes there is a little more engine vibration transferred into the cabin, but I actually like it. Coupled with the new short-throw V3 shifter I put in, and the car has more of a "tautness" when running it up through the gears. Hard to explain any other way.
