Could the Lexus SC Really Make a Comeback?
By Brett Foote

Does the arrival of a new Toyota Supra mean an SC revival is right behind it?

hmm... technically, the mkiv supra is based on the soarer/sc sharing suspension, drivetrain and 2JZ-GE engine of the 91-00 soarer/sc300/sc400. lexus released the sc430, but toyota didnt make a supra based on that. maybe the next gen...

It may be interesting but I don't think it is going to happen. First the Supra is now based on a lower end BMW roadster and likely can't accept a V8 so it won't be the same as the original SC which was based on a higher end likely larger luxury coupe/GT sports car platform that could accept a V8. The new Supra does not look to be a Corvette, Skyline GTR, or 911 competitor anymore but more of just a 370Z, Mustang, Cayman competitor so the positioning would be odd in the Lexus lineup. Where will it go? Is it above the RC coupe or just about even, how far below the LC coupe should the SC be, many think the LC coupe is more of a SC replacement but it is a bit too expensive for that unless they give it a IC only 6 cylinder for around 75K to get more volume. I just don't see it happening though it would be interesting. I think they are better off doing something based on the LC coupe for a new SC that can offer both a 6 and 8 cylinder and maybe take the LC more upmarket after they do that or possibly a higher end car based on the RC for a SC. The new Supra is likely too small, not refined enough, not flexible enough to be a mid level luxury car too.

Even if it did, it will HONESTLY never be the same. Price? Specs? Many fancy electronics?

Besides costing a few kidneys, I think the RC/LC have taken that spot. I personally thought the LC was possibly the replacement for the SC (and in a way does it not look like it?).

I was not surprised with a LC convertible headline a few months ago as when the car launched, the first thing I said was THERE has to be a convertible. I feel we've seen the good days of the SC model and I think we should appreciate the good ole SC as it was. I think it will be one of my favorite over-engineered cars of all time. Sigh.
