Default SC300 Or SC400.. please help

Ok, I need to decide which to get. What are your opinions on each. Which is more tunable, and what is stock 0-60 and 1/4 times? Also what can i expect power wise from the basic mods and who are the good tuners in the market? Who makes good lexus stuff. Any help is appreciated.

The SC300 is more tuneable, practically everything for the 400 has to be custom which makes it expensive and a pain in the ***. A stick SC300 has very similiar 0-60 and 1/4 miles times to pre-98 SC400's. I still give a nod to the pre-98 400 being faster than the stick SC300, but others will dispute that

What's your definition of 'basic' mods? If you mean turbos, the consensus is that Toyomoto is the way to go for the SC300. Mechtech has a custom turbo kit for the SC400, C's (of Japan) has a 5.0 Stroker kit and Supercharger for the 1UZFE. I'm not sure about ECU options for the 300, but the Pre-98 400 has several options from Japan and Lexussc400 and WeaponR have options readily available in the states. Cat-Back exhaust for either is hard to come by, the only place I know of headers for the 400 is from a guy in Australia (sigh... I can't wait till they get shipped! ) The Apexi S-AFC is a good upgrade for either car.

Some questions you should consider are: Do you want auto or stick? How much rwhp do you want to achieve?

when i say basic upgrades i mean, intake, exhaust, headers, ect.
I seen a thing about adding 17hp using the stock airbox by cutting it and making it into a custom intake. Is that for 300 or 400? And I have to have stick. I cant drive an auto, unless its triptronic or e-shift as lexus calls it.

Ok, there you go.... The fact that you have to have a stick shift leaves out the SC400 all together. As far as I know there were no 400's or Soarers made with a stick shift. Also, as far a retrofitting a stick to a 400 V8, from what I hear it is nearly impossible as the ECU would have to be replaced as it was designed to get data from the auto trannie.

That then leaves you with a manual shift SC300. The manual is the rarer of the SC300's as far as I have seen. You will see 5 automatics for every one manual. There was one for sale on ebay recently. It was up in Mass. just outside of Boston. From the pics it looked real nice. You may want to search the concluded auctions on ebay for "Lexus SC3*" and see if it sold. When I last saw it the bids did not meet the sellers reserve.

Good luck.

You're looking at minor difference. Think about this, SC300 is just like N/A Supra. Think of the possabilities with the Supra, they almost all apply to an SC300. With SC300 you're a turbokit away from doing 12 sec in 1/4 mile. With SC400 a supercharger of the same price wouldn't be able to do that for you. With SC300 5 speed you can convert to Supra 6 speed transmition. Pretty much anything that applys to N/A Toyota Supra applys to SC300.

I know a guy here, in Chicago area who converted his N/A to turbo. Not sure what kit he used but his car does 12s and 11s (with a good lunch) in 1/4 mile. His car is a 93.5 automatic. He did just a few things, I belive he build the tranny, got TT rims, TT breaks, and turbed it. It's a nice machine. He's known on the net as N/A Dave or Dave S. on SupraForums.
