Default Trunk Question

The trunk won't stay open on my '94 SC400 - the spring seems to be dead. Do the two dampeners (shock absorber looking things) also provide the spring for the mechanism, or is that located somewhere else?

Basically, I just want to know if replacing the two dampeners will solve my problem, so i don't waste $50.

Thanks!

there is no spring, replace those two "shock absorber looking things" and you will be fine, but next time try searching first

I've made 14 posts in the 3 years I've been on this forum. I search so often that I never have a need to post.

Just thought I'd ask a question for a change!

Thanks for the help.

You need to get lighter and heatup the nuts in order to burn the stuff that prevents you from removing them without striping them. You can get new ones from autorock.

Howiedoit did a good pictoral on how to change the trunk shocks (in 02).

Rockauto.com for parts.

If yours has a spoiler, they are different part number than one without.

I did mine (92 SC400). Pretty easy.

No more knots on head (at least from the trunk lid.

Not necessarily. I didn't have to, mine had never been replaced before.

also, the trunk lid need not be removed to change the shocks, just be sure to remove the two square rubber bumper to open the trunk lid fully so you can take them off properly.

Ebay sells those trunk shocks for cheap.... Be known they are a little tricky to replace with the fit in ball socket...

My car came with a nice sturdy 4 foot piece of pvc to hold up my trunk lid. You mean this isn't OEM?

Im pretty sure alot of people have this problem. I can probably start a poll on this. On the older SC they do tend to go out along with the hood shocks. Especially if you have the trunk spoiler. There are no springs just shocks. As far as replacing them, its pretty straight forward. All you have to do is pull out on the trunk lining so you have access to the nuts that hold the trunk shocks in place.
