There are some differences. I don't know what it is exacly but you can tell by looking under the plastic cover. Older rims generally have ridges between the holes while the newer ones don't.

so the only difference is the ridge between the holes?
what i mean is the spoke design. did the spoke design change through out the years?

older centercaps dont quite fit newer rims either and vice versa. also chrome centercaps dont correctly fit polished rims and vice versa either.
