This is an old thread, but it was very helpful. I finally got aroung to swapping my old steering wheel for one from a GS 300. Picked it up for $100 plus airbag. Took me awhile to reset the airbag light, but it worked. If you are doing the swap, be patient as you toggle between TC and AB until the light goes out.

The swap makes a great improvement to the interior and I'm happy until I do my new upgrade.

 

How did you see the light while toggling the wires?

 

As posted previously, I ran a switch to do this and was unsuccessful.

 

I notice in the start to this thread it says to ground it to the car and in the Supra forum post referred to near the top of this post it says to ground it to the negative terminal (or vice versa). Anyway, I tried it both ways with the same poor result.

 

It's just a knack... try it at different speeds, and look for the quick flashes, and continue to do whatever is getting that quick flash. It's skill and luck, keep trying it. Remember, all that it takes is once. It probably took about 35 tries for me to get it. If something's not working, try a different pace or a different ground.

WadeLove, I just used a long piece of speaker wirethat reached from the diagnostic port to the door hinge. I could see the light as I sat on the door sill...With the wires "plugged" in, I just alternated between TC and AB by "grounding" it or touching the wire to the door hinge....Good luck.

 

Still trying to make this work! Had some great suggestions from Forum members. I see something slightly more complicate, I.e. with the key to ACC, only the airbag light blinks. For now, it is blinking once on the first TC touch and, at least sometimes, twice (regular and then fast) on the second TC touch.

In "ON" the airbag light blinks on TC and the CRUISE blinks on AB taps. Still have not gotten just the right combo but since moving to DTC2 in the cabin, I feel a lot closer to the right solution than when operating from DTC1 under the hood.

 

So, Wade, how did you ever get this to work?

Well, I used DTC2 and two wires with soldered pins I pressed into TC and AB. I held TC to ground while inserting the key. Then I single tap alternated between TC and AB to the cadence of one Iowa, two Iowa. When the airbag light started flashing like crazy I didn't move for about five seconds. Then I released the wires and turned off the ignition. When I started the car, the airbag light was FINALLY OFF!

BTW, I turned the key to ON rather than just to ACC. Also, when I tapped TC to ground with the key out of the ignition, the airbag light still flashed on. That is why I decided to use ON instead of ACC.

Also, I removed the panel so I could take out the DTC2. (3 screws)

I was able to do this
I used the engine port
First confirm code 22

Then I poked wires into tc and ab
I taped off the battery + terminal because the wind was blowing
Used an alligator clip clipped to battery ground terminal

Turned ignition on and did the sequence
According to my reading on this subject, just tc and ab no need to double tap
But the switch must be less than 0.2 seconds with about 1 second on each wire
I just touched the ground on the wire ends and after a few try the light is off
I didn't even get to see the dash as I did this and I forgot to ground tc at the end, didn't matter

finally got my airbag warning light reset after wasting far too much time on it.

The thing I missed in all the instructions:

It only works if you REMOVE the paper clip connecting E1 and TC before trying to reset the warning light!

The paper clip is inserted to get into the diagnostic mode / get the blink codes.

To do the actual reset, you have to remove the paper clip, just insert the wires into TC and AB plus one wire to ground and do the wire dance as instructed by various people here.

I managed to do it after just 1 try after removing the paper clip.

I did it by single tapping TC then AB then TC than AB. Worked like a charm.

Whoever can't seem to do it after all probably hasn't removed the paper clip and tried to do it while the blink codes were active.

I've worked on the cluster and got the airbag light on. Is it necessary to do the test to get code 22 before doing the wire dance on Tc and AB? I know the reason for the light, why do I need to test for the code?

 

Thank you all for your coaching and guidance. I have 3 SC 300 Clusters I needed to test. Which prompted my airbag light to come on. Following the instructions on this thread I go it done in 7 attempts. By the way all 3 are in working condition.

 

Easiest solution, take the air bag light out.

Did this over a year ago and it's been perfect since.

Is my airbag functional? I haven't gotten to test it and I hope I never do!

 

I may end up doing the same. I've had the airbag light on ever since I got the car. Tried numerous times to reset the code 22 unsuccessfully. Switched to a 3-spoke steering wheel, added the airbag harness adapter, tried again to clear the code, checked again and had multiple codes... Eventually, I removed the passenger airbag along with the passenger seat. I'm hoping the driver's airbag works despite the CELs, but it's not the sort of thing you want to find out the hard way! So, I've left the bulb in for the time being as a reminder that I need to figure it out one of these days.
